Should I have been offered a membrane sweep?

Just back from hospital (40+5 days) and they just did a quick scan and said see you in a week (when I'll be 12 days over). My friend just asked if they did a membrane sweep- I'd never heard of it and wasn't offered one either. Should I have been? And if you've had one, did it help bring on labour?
Thanks

I refused one each time over due as I couldn’t find anything to suggest they actually work. They’re also called a stretch and sweep.

I'm 40 weeks exactly tomorrow & have a sweep booked. Had one with each of the prior pregnancies too! Think it differs with each area when they are offered tho.

My first baby my sweep set me off at 40+4 & small was born the following morning. Second time i had two, the second one triggered but slowly! Hoping this one kick starts

I had two sweeps and neither worked I was still induced 12 days after my due date I wish I didn't bother with the sweeps

I live in Germany and it's not done over here to my knowledge, I guess because there's no evidence it works!

I had one every day for a week in my 38th week because I was in hospital waiting to be induced and was desperate to try and get into labour myself.

What I found was that they caused a massive rush of endorphins that lasted about 6 hours afterwards. Was really peculiar and never experienced it before or since. I think if I'd been really ready to go it would have helped. Had so many that I discovered the really rough ones were best. (Second TMI apology of the day Blush)

Consultant refused any more after about the fifth one because of infection risk.

I had second baby two days ago At 41 + 3 and didn't bother with a sweep, I was hoping she would come in her own time and she did

I've had three overdue babies and so many sweeps I can't remember the number. None any use except with baby 2. Waters had already broken. I didn't want to fuck about with the pessary as had dc1 at home. Amazing, old style, hard faced midwife listened to me, and gave me the most brutal sweep ever. Completely different to all the others I had. Needed gas and air! She told me to go for a walk. I was in established labour in 10 minutes. Baby out in 2 hours. Brilliant! Loved her.

Novinosincebambino · 07/06/2018 21:56

Was the baby high? If they're high then they won't give a sweep in case they accidentally break your waters and the baby drops down suddenly and gets tangled in their cord. I was supposed to get one on my due date and the following week (my second) but baby was too high. I went 12 days over.

I thought it was just me! Brutal seems to be how they need to do them. I got annoyed at anyone who was too gentle. Best one was the Indian lady junior doctor who grinned maniacally while snapping her gloves on and proudly announced that she was going to perform the roughest sweep I'd ever had. Indeed it was- she had hands like shovels. Still didn't work, but I did produce a baby for her six hours after they broke my waters and she was just about to go off shift. I was so pleased with myself!Grin

Dd1 I had two sweeps after my due date which did naff all and went 11 days over.

Dd2 induction booked for a Tuesday when I would be 38+1, was told a sweep would make things more favourable for induction so had one on the Thursday before. Mucus plug went the next day, waters broke on Sunday and I ended up being induced a day early as labour didn’t start spontaneously.

I think they only work if your body and the baby are ready.

mistermagpie · 07/06/2018 22:08

With both my babies I had one booked for my due date. No idea why, it just seemed to be the practice. I didn't make it to my due date with either though.
