18 month old waking like a newborn!

Hello,

So my nearly 18 month old was previously sleeping through at 12-14 months. He then started nursery, had a string of horrible viral illnesses and has since been waking all through the night. At first I just went with it as there was lots going on but it’s now 4 months in and I can’t cope! He wakes almost hourly screaming for me to come into his room. He settles quickly but I have to stay in with him until he’s asleep otherwise he also likes me to stay in the room when he’s going to sleep initially. I don’t think he’s hungry/thirsty as feeding well in the day...I think he just wants me around if he wakes!

I’m now 30 weeks pregnant and there’s no way I’ll be able to keep this up with a newborn.

Should I:

1. Just wait it out another month and see if he settles by himself?
2. Do some sort of crying it out method and stop staying in his room whilst he falls asleep?

Yes definitely do controlled crying
Waking every hour is absolutely ridiculous at his age
