Essential oils and babies

Wondering if anyone can advise, I'm wanting to put some essential oils (lavender and chamomile) in a diffuser in my room for DS at night. He is 5 months old, but was peen so is still small.
An internet search has given me such conflicting ideas from 'yes it's great to aid sleep' to 'do not use essential oils with babies!' I was originally searching for the number of drops to use but now I'm worrying it's not safe.
Any one taken an aromatherapy course who can help me please?

Thank you Smile

I'd be wary, but only based on the fact that if ingested they are highly toxic. Obviously you'll be keeping them out of reach though.

Could you try a sleepy balm instead. I use the lush one on my baby. Don't know if it helps sleep but it smells so good and sorted his eczema out Smile

Personally no, I wouldn’t without getting advice from an aromatherapist you trust. Lavender specifically isn’t great to use with babies (boys especially) because it does something to oestrogen production. I think the research that’s been done was on topical use, so don’t know if it would be an issue in a diffuser. But at any rate, even things like Vicks or snuffle babe can cause breathing issues in babies prone to asthma. I think without professional advice I would err on the side of caution and avoid the risk of anything irritating the airways. I’m asthmatic and I know essential oils can sometimes bother me. I would maybe try something else to help him sleep until you come up with something that might work without having to take the chance.

When I did an aromatherapy course the consus was no as 0 evidence on the effects on babies have been published.
