What age could your dc go up&down stairs

I'm wary that baby gates are only to be used until 24months so curious to know at what age could your dc confidently go up and down the stairs.

We allowed ds at 3 to circulate the house alone!! Our house is odd, 2 flights of stairs at each side of the house, 1 winding! Add 4 ddogs + siblings to the mix it was an accident waiting to happen any sooner.
At 3.8 he is very confident now.
More so than me still!

Mine could easily craw up and down before she could walk, so probably by 13 months. Obviously we didn’t allow her to unsupervised! But she could do it safely enough.

Mindisboggled · 26/05/2018 18:33

Mine is 15month can crawl up but can't get down again.

Ds3 is nearly 2 but has been confidently going up and down the stairs for about 6 months. But my other dc were older. Every child is different.

feesh · 26/05/2018 18:36

My twins were taught to come down the stairs safely (feet first) at a very early age because I have physical issues and can’t carry both. I think they were 9-10 months. They could go upstairs on their own around 7-8 months.

My singleton was a bit trickier to ‘train’. He’s been going upstairs on his own for about 2 months (he’s 12 months now) and he’s only just learnt to come down, but he bum shuffles down so needs close supervision.

As for walking up and down stairs, my twins were definitely ok to do that well before 2 - probably around 18 months?

We caught DD climbing ours at 8 months. Taught her to come down on her tummy. Never had any gates.

SoyDora · 26/05/2018 18:39

About 12 months. We’ve never had a stair gate.

cookiesfortheunicorn · 26/05/2018 18:39

Mine went up and downstairs freely as soon as they could walk, didn't bother with stair gates.

statetrooperstacey · 26/05/2018 18:41

Free rangers here to. Under a year.

Iceweasel · 26/05/2018 18:42

6 months up, 9 months down

PotteringAlong · 26/05/2018 18:42

My 15 month old can get up and down. We don’t have a stair gate either.

TheBogWitchIsBack · 26/05/2018 18:44

My dd is 3 and pretty much mastered the stairs at home. She can go up and down then with no assistance.
She gets a but nervous with other stairs though, like in shops.

TheBogWitchIsBack · 26/05/2018 18:45

Never used a stair gate btw.

Ohcomeonn · 26/05/2018 18:49

My dd could walk up and down by herself by 20 months. I don't recall her ever crawling up them; I must have just carried her. Mine is almost 3 and we still have the top stair gate up (never had a bottom one) but we don't really have a hallway and if she was to walk out of her room in the dark it would be very easy for her to slip down the stairs so the gate isn't going anywhere for a while.

Mindisboggled · 26/05/2018 20:27

How did you teach them to go down. Mines since to try take a step then throws herself, I'm expecting number too in 3months so would be handy if she could do it herself so I'm not tryin to carry a newborn and 18mth old down.

Soon after they were crawling. Taught them to go down feet first on their tummies. By literally putting them in the right position and supporting them to slide down. They’d do it really fast! Once they were walking they’d come down on their bums. Although we had stair gates we were not very consistent with using them, mostly because they learned to open them. The younger 2 walked rather late ( 22 and 21 months) so wre tall enough and sensible enough to walk down within a few weeks of walking.

Ohcomeonn · 26/05/2018 20:46

I just held her hand and walked down with her

definitelynotsupermum · 26/05/2018 20:47

My 2 year old still isn't great at coming down the stairs on his own!

Anditstartsagain · 26/05/2018 20:52

Mine is 21 months he is good going up and down alone we done lots of practice its took him about 3 months to get good but I'm keeping the gate for my own sanity don't want him wandering up and down without me knowing just yet. Should be ok by 2 I would think.

My older was around 3 but we lived in a flat then with stone stairs outside so he wasn't allowed down without holding my hand until 4.

Mindisboggled · 26/05/2018 21:07

Think tomorrow I'm going to start letting dc walk up and down herself more often. Suppose if I don't encourage practice she'll never get it.

DD is 3 and has been doing the stairs alone since she was around 2. First on her bum, then walking. She knows to hold the banister and if she needs to carry things in her hands she has to come down on her bum, just in case she falls due to not holding on. Our stairs are very steep.

fabulous01 · 26/05/2018 22:01

I only had one baby gate in the living room and one outside kitchen. And I live in a town house with lots of stairs and twins
The need to learn how to do them and mine have only fell twice and they bounced (phew)

RainbowFairiesHaveNoPlot · 27/05/2018 07:53

Had baby gates gone by the time the youngest was 2 - she's not the greatest on stairs even now (dyspraxia) but was fine coming down them on her bum.

gingerbreadbiscuits · 27/05/2018 08:00

Wow this is a revelation and I am not overly safety conscious.

Dd walked at 11 months, managed the stairs sound after but then quickly refused to walk on them again (wanted cuddles/lazy). At just 2 yrs she is just starting to walk on them again. Last week she did try to jump from the top! Out landing is narrow and I don’t want to give her complete free range, my make up would be destroyed, so the baby gates are staying.
