How many vests for my newborn?

FTM here. Just wondering how many vests Baby might need in 'newborn' size? EDD is 7th August so if it's a nice summer I wanted to get some nice vests but I'm unsure of how many I should get in newborn size or should I get 'up to 1month' or up to 3months'? Advice appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Hun. It’s a tricky one as babies can vary so much in size when they are born. My little girl was early so needed prem/1st size which I was totally unprepared for! You should be pretty safe with newborn size but if it is warm weather you probably just need to put baby in sleepsuits without a vest underneath. I’d suggest getting about 10 sleepsuits and maybe 6 vests.

First off congrats and good luck!

I'm a first time dad (currently sat downstairs watching a crap film on tv as little man (3days old) has decided he's not ready for bed!)

Anyway to the question, bloody loads! I never realised how much stuff you needed! He can go through a couple a day at the moment!

I had dd1 8lb and dd2 7.12lb ish (can't remember Blush) and we had a couple of the 7.5lb/new baby ones but the most useful I found were the up to 1 month/10lb ones. At least ten short sleeve and sleeveless. Perhaps a couple long sleeve ones. And have the next size ready in a drawer! Remember that it is really easy to get vests and things online and supermarkets

You could always buy two packs of each but leave one in the pack so you can exchange them for a bigger size up if you need to. We needed lots of vest and sleep suits in new born as both of my babies were small!

coffeecoffeemorecoffee · 25/05/2018 22:17

Both mine grew out of the newborn/first size within around 10 days, I think I had maybe 10-12 vests and then about 7 of the upto 1 month in the drawer ready.. then just topped up as they grew. You need plenty of vests, I remember changing mine lots in the early days from dribbling milk, vomit, poonamis etc

Also, mine were 7.3oz and 8.6oz and both of them were swamped by the first size so definitely get the newborn/first size just incase

I was astonished by the amount of clothing we were given as presents, most of it in newborn sizes. I could have dressed quintuplets. Lots of it only arrived in the first week after the baby was born. I'd say don't shop too much. (At 9mo all presents were outgrown.) Also would you consider buying a bundle of preloved clothing?... some lovely stuff at a fraction of the price.

Thank you 👍🏼 yes supermarkets are great. I will bare all in mind thank you all so much for your help 😊

My baby is 5 weeks old. I found that actually with vests it's better that they're slightly on the bigger side as he hates having things pulled on over his head, so get a few newborn and a few 0-3 and then see how you go when it's born. Just get some plain white short sleeved ones at first and then you can choose nice ones once you know the size. H&M do in between sizes (1-2, 2-4 month) as well.

harrietm87 · 26/05/2018 10:14

Oh and in terms of quantity, we get through 1-3 vests per day depending on poo explosions so depends on how often you'll be washing them.

Watch out for the variety in newborn sizes across brands too. We had newborn sizes from M&S, Primark and ASDA (on their size guides they’re meant to fit up to around 9lbs) which didn’t fit our 6lb6 baby. Instead we used Next whose newborn size went up to 7lbs 8.

Baby only just growing out of the Next ones and now fitting the other brands. Just waiting for her to move up to 0-3 months clothing and she’s two months now.

In hindsight I would have waited until she was born to buy clothes as we ended up buying more as the ones we had didn’t fit.

Eeeeek2 · 28/05/2018 08:51

My 7lb 9 ds never fitted newborn as he is very long. I'd get 1 pack of newborn and then more up to 1 month. Very easy to get more if you need, you can always use too big ones if necessary.

catsofa · 28/05/2018 08:59

You need loads because they poo all over everything all the time, but it's really only worth getting nice stuff in 3 months plus sizes just because whatever size they start out they grow out of everything very very fast at first.

Try ebay for newborn bundles of secondhand vests and sleep suits v cheap.

firsttimedad79 · 28/05/2018 11:47

I second @catsofa on the secondhand stuff. We found loads on our local sell and seek site. A lot of the stuff in the bundles was new stuff with tags on as well :)
