Flying with an almost 1yr old...

I'm going on honeymoon in 18days (hoorah!)and DS is coming too. The flight is 10hrs (mad i know!).

I'm thinking of packing small, non-messy, non-noisy gifts for DS to open every couple of hours to keep him occupied. I thought a couple of board books would be ok...any other ideas?

He'll be almost 1, but he's also quite advanced

some snacks as well - grapes, raisins or whatever he likes.
We found books were the best distraction for our DD on a 26 hour journey (nightmare) but she loves books anyway. We also bought boards which you fit shapes into from ELC.

I bought piles of stuff for dd at this age - finger puppets, mini board books etc - and she didn't look at any of it. She just stood in front of our seats and jumped around a lot - then finally went to sleep n the chair thing you can get. (she was a bit big for it but it contained her!)

26 hours! Bloody hell!

I'll remember that when it's hour 8 and i'm knackered!

I don't think he'd give a monkeys about finger puppets TBH.

Might take some rice cakes though.

DD only slept for 3 hours. She was 15 months at the time. We're taking a boat to France this year

Rice cakes are good - and breadsticks.

We did it twice last year with DS who was around 1 to visit grandma in Florida. Each time I packed him his own special little bag with some of those mini library noddy/mr men etc little board books, some little toy cars (his faves were little wooden ones from ELC), a toy train, and a little doll to play with. He still uses his little bag to carry around his finger puppet collection.

Washersaurus · 18/05/2007 11:54

Oh yes and don't forget plenty of snacks!!

Not very helpful, but everytime we have flown, it does not matter what we bring. The only thing our children wants to do is bounce up and down, walk up and down the aisle and entertain the other passengers .

We have been lucky that our fellow passengers have been good natured about our social/active children.

You need to prepare yourself that there is a chance that the only thing your son wants to do is talk with you and hubby, and then cross your fingers and hope that he'll sleep most of the way.

Some of our friends bring a portable dvd player and that keep their child quiet.

CarGirl · 18/05/2007 12:03

my only advice is don't have a hot drink yourself - too dangerous! My dd never slept on the plane too excited - once was enough ............

PregnantGrrrl · 18/05/2007 12:06

good idea about the hot drink- i'll avoid!

he seems to attract lots of cooing from strangers generally, so hopefully he'll look adorable as usual and people won't mind him too much.

I've worked out that the last 4 hrs will be within his usual bedtime...fingers optimistically crossed!

Good luck and have a great honeymoon

maisemor · 18/05/2007 12:55

By the way congratulations with the wedding and good luck with everything. I hope you enjoy the day.

I'll be crossing my fingers that he'll sleep the last half of the journey

Are you going anywhere nice and sunny?

PregnantGrrrl · 18/05/2007 12:56

San Francisco and LA. Can't wait!

Going to San Fran zoo, aquarium, Universal etc.

maisemor · 18/05/2007 13:08

I really wanna go there, just so I can sing the song "We are going to San Francisco" and then I'll make my family wear flowers in their hair. Okay maybe only me and my daughter

PregnantGrrrl · 18/05/2007 13:23

we went to San Fran a few years ago, pre baby. We took a trip to San Jose, and i sang 'do you know the way to San Jose?' the rest of the day.
