Bottle teat sizes and sippy cups

My DS has always struggled a bit with feeding and used to choke all the time. When he was a newborn we kept trying to find slower flow teats before realising we were already using the slowest flow. As a result, it never even occurred to me that I need to move to a faster flow teat. Well DS is now 8 months old and still on number 1 teat (MAM bottles)... A couple of months ago I got told it's ridiculous and he needs to move up to faster flow so I got some number 2 teats but he really struggled. For meal times he has a free flow Tommie Tippie sippy cup which he drinks water from ok but still chokes quite frequently... It's been bugging me for some time now, but I'm not sure what the best thing to do is. Should I try and get him used to faster flow teats or just stick with no.1 as he seems happy with them?

Also, what's the best sippy cup to use? There are so many out there it's completely confusing!

I'm watching this thread... my 10 month old is still on slow flow! He's breastfed too but always had a dream feed of formula. However I'm giving him bottles in the day now to get ready for nursery.
We just use the sippy cup the health visitor gave us. I think Tommy tippee do very similar ones. Free flow with 3 little holes. Don't get the non spill ones. Hv told me they don't allow them to learn how to drink properly. We're also trialling a 360 cup and one with a straw! The bog standard wins every time.

If hes fine on number 1 teat then leave him on that.

The age on the teats are a guide only.

Regarding sippy cups, if hes choking then you could try a non spill one with a valve in it so it doesnt come out as fast as a free flow.

My ds is 12 months and he chokes on free flow sippy cups so he has a non spill one.

My DD never got past size 2 Mam teats, she went up to those at 3 months old but any attempts to move up again were met with choking and crying. She’s now 11 months so we’ve given up entirely and she’ll stay as she is until she gives up her pre-bedtime bottle. We have the Mam sippy cup and she has her morning milk and water throughout the day in it and there’s no choking. Maybe you could try that?

Both DCs used a size 1 teat until we ditched the bottles at 16 months. If it ain't broke...

We went with which cup was accepted. For DD1 that was a doidy at home and a soft straw cup when out (she wouldn't take a sippy or 360 until over a year). DD2 had a doidy at home and a sippy when out.

Thanks all sounds like I've been worrying about nothing and should just stick to the slow flow teat then! DS is also breastfed still but has always been supplemented.

On a related point, how often are you meant to replace teats?? I'm still using the same ones from when he was a newborn oops. They look fine but do look a little yellowy compared to the new no. 2 ones I got.

DH thought I've gone crazy as we already have about 5 different sippy cups at home, but I think I will get a few more to try... At the end of the day, I'm the one who has to deal with the choking and the watery mess most of the time...

You can buy new ones and the old ones should just pop out of the lid.x
