DS not taking enough milk

For 9 weeks now DS has dramatically reduced his milk intake, most days he takes around 12-14oz.

He hasn’t lost weight as of yet but is steadily dropping on his centiles.

He has been prescribed ranitidine (?) but it hasn’t increased his intake as of yet, only day 5 though.

I don’t feel he has reflux as he’s really settled, doesn’t cry much and only seems uncomfortable when he’s trying to feed. He has been referred to the feeding clinic. Does anyone have any ideas? I feel a little lost

Given his age and how little he's taking, you need to be concerned and pushing to be seen.

Have you had it confirmed there's no tongue tie? I'm guessing he's formula fed as you know quite precisely how much he is taking / not - have you tried him on a different formula? or a different bottle?

He’s been seen 3 times in the last week, yesterday at a&e due to only taking 6oz all day. They checked the roof of his mouth and tongue, all fine. Just told me to go back if he stops having wet nappies. I’ve tried a few different bottles, different teat flows etc.

I’m reluctant to think it’s reflux as he’s really settled and happy - until I put a bottle in his mouth, but I’m only going off what I’ve read online

Could it be something doesn't agree with him in the feed? Lactose intolerance etc?? Just a thought as you say his discomfort is occurring when you feed him. Hope you are both ok OP keep pushing your gp ThanksCake

I feel utterly useless, keep pestering but feel like I’m not getting anywhere. They’ve said it can’t be allergy or intolerances as his skin is clear. I’ve tried various types of formulas, diff brands and comfort etc but none seem to help.

Thanks for all the help

Oh @Bonelessbanquet I'm sorry I don't feel we have helped here. I suspect you have but is it worth trying your HV? Alternatively could you insist your GP refer you to a Pediatrician? A couple of other thoughts you say baby is uncomfortable as soon as he starts to feed - could it be thrush? Or can you try (and you probably already have) different feeding positions so perhaps rather than the cradle in the nook of your arm sit baby up and hold him?? Sorry OP not sure if any of this helps - thinking of you Thanksfeel free to message me if you just want a chat etc

Sorry sure you have tried this HiPP Organic?

Bonelessbanquet · 14/05/2018 19:54

I will have a try at different positions and see if that helps, I’ve tried aptamil, sma and HiPP. Thanks for the suggestions, DD was a fab eater so I have no experience. They said his tongue was fine yesterday so presume they’d have checked for thrush too?

I would imagine they should have but maybe worth asking them to check?
