Nappy - is this normal? *warning - picture!*

My 7 week old is ebf and has recently been suffering with wind (although not so bad that I’m worried) and her nappies are the reddish/brown colour as shown in the picture. They also smell and it smells when she breaks wind which I have been led to believe is not usual when baby is ebf. She does 2-3 dirty nappies each day and plenty of wet. Has small naps in the day and will generally sleep from 10pm - 5:30am without complaint.

Do I need to worry about this? Any advice much appreciated!

That doesn't look great OP. I should make clear that I have no experience of babies that age as we adopted DD at 8 months old. But to me that looks a bit bloody and I'd have it checked out.

afreerangeperson · 12/05/2018 18:56

Do you have cracked or bleeding nipples? Could she have swallowed blood?

PleaseAndThanks · 12/05/2018 18:56

Definitely get checked out

Just googled for you. Red blood in diarrhoea could be bacterial infection.

DearTeddyRobinson · 12/05/2018 18:58

It looks a bit dark/bloody to me. I seem to remember mustard nappies at that age. I'd see the GP

Psychobabble123 · 12/05/2018 19:00

Absolutely take her to OOH OP, it is far better to be safe than sorry

spugzbunny · 12/05/2018 19:01

Personally I would call 111 on that one and try and get an out of hours appointment. They can reassure you if it's ok and if not you can get baby an appointment.

welshweasel · 12/05/2018 19:02

That doesn’t look normal to me. Ring 111 tonight.

Wishfulmakeupping · 12/05/2018 19:02

Yes 101 or ooh just to check I think op

Flisspaps · 12/05/2018 19:03

Yeah, ring 111 (not 101, that's the police!)

IWantMyHatBack · 12/05/2018 19:03

Agreed, 111. None of mine every had nappies like that, much paler until we started weaning

Katescurios · 12/05/2018 19:04

That does look bloody, with DD runny nappies have always been more yellowish than red, sometimes with a vinegar smell. She never had red poo.

Ivegotfamilyandidrinkcupsoftea · 12/05/2018 19:04

Agreeing with everyone else saying get her checked out

Wishfulmakeupping · 12/05/2018 19:04

Sorry sleep deprived yes 111!

BigBairyHollocks · 12/05/2018 19:05

I agree OP,in my experience it’s not what you would expect to see before solids have started.Theres probably lots of reasons for it but best to get checked out.

Racecardriver · 12/05/2018 19:06

How long has this been happening? Unless there is a chance that she has swallowed blood I would take her to the hospital immediately.

Katescurios · 12/05/2018 19:07

According to the internet red tinged diarrhoea in a baby can indicate a bacterial infection.

theboud · 12/05/2018 19:07

Definitely OOH tonight. If she starts screaming and pulling her knees up then straight to A and E.

As freerange said it could be blood from your nipples if they’re bleeding but you should get it checked.

rubyroot · 12/05/2018 19:11

Agree Drs straight away- looks like blood

PrawnBhuna · 12/05/2018 19:17

How long have her nappies been like this? It’s definitely not a usual colour for an ebf baby so I concur with above posters suggesting get it checked, but if she’s had this for a long time and seems otherwise well I wouldn’t panic yourself unnecessarily. 111 is a good suggestion, good luck

housedoerupper · 12/05/2018 19:35

Bloody nappies can also be a sign of milk protein allergy but do get it checked by doctor asap.

WaitingTillJuly17 · 12/05/2018 19:38

They’ve been darker than a mustard colour for about a week or so I would say. Just waiting for 111 to answer.

Could you go to a walk on centre op? Might be quicker than 111.

Lindy2 · 12/05/2018 19:43

EBF poos normally look like korma sauce. A bit yellow in colour and soft texture but not liquid.
My daughter had a milk protein intollerence which caused a green tinge.
I would be worried about the nappy in your picture. The poo is too dark and too liquid. I would be wanting to get that checked as soon as pissible and due to your baby's very young age I think a call to an out of hours GP or 111 would be appropriate.
How long have the nappies been like that?

bellanotte22 · 12/05/2018 19:46

Yes EBF are yellowish. Good idea to get baby checked out to be safe.
