Nappy - is this normal? *warning - picture!*

My 7 week old is ebf and has recently been suffering with wind (although not so bad that I’m worried) and her nappies are the reddish/brown colour as shown in the picture. They also smell and it smells when she breaks wind which I have been led to believe is not usual when baby is ebf. She does 2-3 dirty nappies each day and plenty of wet. Has small naps in the day and will generally sleep from 10pm - 5:30am without complaint.

Do I need to worry about this? Any advice much appreciated!

Dr is going to call back and possibly visit, hopefully nothing too serious.

I wouldn’t say that’s normal, no. DD was EBF for 5 months and we never had one like that; all were on the yellow spectrum. Hope 111 gets back soon.

Iputthescrewinthetuna · 12/05/2018 20:02

Hope you get an answer soon.
I wouldn't say that was normal? How is baby in general? X

Just checking - what have you been eating?? I remember a terrible green happy scaring me o cow, then realising I had eaten Thai green curry the night before. Hope all ok.

PrincessConsuelaBannanaHammock · 12/05/2018 20:15

I think ebf babies nappies are more yellow usually. Glad you have called the doctor & hope all is well.

pieceofpurplesky · 12/05/2018 20:16

Hope all goes well op

Loyaultemelie · 12/05/2018 20:39

Hope everything ok when Dr gets back to you Thanks

Loyaultemelie · 12/05/2018 20:39

Excuse random flowers they weren't meant to appear Blush

ScarlettDarling · 12/05/2018 20:42

That definitely would concern me, glad you're getting it checked out.

WhatisaNarwhal · 12/05/2018 20:43

Just to say to a PP- ebf baby poo can be entirely liquid and healthy- dd never passed a stool with a thicker consistency than custard until she was weaned.

But yes- also should be more yellow. DD passed bloody stools when she had very bad bacterial tonsillitis, and gastro simultaneously- we were at a&e for hours, but all was well with antibiotics.

Hope all goes okay for you and your little one Op Flowers

ConfusedZebra · 12/05/2018 20:45

I worked as a nanny and looked after a little boy who had similar nappies. He was diagnosed with dairy intolerance- was about 8-10 weeks old. He was on special formula for a year and had no dairy at all. Once he turned one we started introducing milk to his diet. SLOWLY! By the time he was 2 he ate everything. Now he's 6 and perfectly healthy :) Get to the doctors ASAP and just keep calm. She'll be fine but judging by the nappy something is up with her.

Bobbiepin · 12/05/2018 20:46

For those suggesting blood from your nipples I wouldn't expect that much. It's more likely to produce red posseting rather than poo. Hope all's ok OP Flowers

Rawesome6 · 12/05/2018 20:55

I'd get that checked out, my DD had bad stomachs at around the same age but the colours were green through to grey, not reddish. Hope all ok OP

Skyechasemarshalontheway · 12/05/2018 21:04

Glad your getting baby seen. Hopefully they can reasure you what has caused it.

I forgot about bf poos and ds2 is due in 9 weeks the things we forget.

MrsCalypsoGrant · 12/05/2018 21:04

My mix-fed DD had exactly the same & was finally diagnosed with milk allergy after spending 9 weeks in hospital on & off, she was putting on weight & happy, so they initially dismissed the allergy theory, but bad bleeding persisted. She was taken off standard formula & breast milk & put on prescription formula, the bleeding stopped after a few hours.

Having been told she would likely have the allergy for the rest of her life due to its presenting severity, & most probably present with other allergies along the way, she outgrew it before a year! Definitely get it checked out. Take care

CharlieKat · 12/05/2018 21:22

OP are you on any medication? The comment you made about the smelly nappies/ wind reminded me as this happened suddenly to my 2 week old EBF baby when I had a short hospital stay and was given anti inflammatory/pain killers. It definitely affected my baby's gut afterwards for a while (although was told 'safe' for breastfeeding).
Hope you get some answers.

Lmj25 · 12/05/2018 21:26

Hope all is ok for you both Thanks

WaitingTillJuly17 · 13/05/2018 01:34

Thanks everyone. We’re currently spending the night in hospital. Have been seen by paediatricians and surgeons. They suspect dairy allergy at the moment and we’re waiting for test results. Will possibly need scans later too to check her digestive system is ok. Thank God for the NHS, they’ve been brilliant. Thanks for your advice everyone, looks like I’m going dairy free!

Hi OP hope all is well with your little one. I'm glad she's at the hospital where she can get medical care

stopbeingadramallama · 13/05/2018 01:40

Hope everything ends up okay xx

Ivegotfamilyandidrinkcupsoftea · 13/05/2018 07:28

Hope you get answers soon op

PrawnBhuna · 13/05/2018 08:37

Good luck OP, hope that they get you both home quickly and that your DD’s little tummy settles. Looks like lots of people on here called it right and judging by their experience with any luck if it is dairy allergy your wee girl will hopefully outgrow it.

ConfusedZebra · 13/05/2018 09:12

Bless you it must have been so scary! She'll be fine though. They will probably prescribe DOMPERIDONE to settle her tummy, helps wit nausea, tummy aches and put her on Neocate formula. Honestly if you push through the first year you can probably start introducing dairy to her diet once she turns 1. 😊

Lindy2 · 13/05/2018 09:28

I hope all is well. It sounds like you are getting good care.
Dairy free isn't too bad to do as there are so many dairy alternatives.
Most children also outgrow dairy issues in time.

anxiousmumma12 · 13/05/2018 09:51

put her on Neocate formula.

Doubt so .
Op is breast feeding
