Baby just turned 9 months, have slowly weened down to just feeding at night. Yesterday I stopped that and my left breast today is so swollen and in so much pain. I’ve manually expressed twice just a tiny bit but it’s doing little to help. Can barely life my arm and it’s like a boulder on my chest laying down. All advice welcome/ needed!!!

Do you mean you have just stopped feeding at bedtime or through the night?

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 08/05/2018 20:10

all Through the night- she now sleeps through. So no bf at all

Oh no 😞 Might be worth phoning a breastfeeding helpline like the La Leche League. They give very good advice.

Hot bath and hand express a bit? Do you think you have a blocked duct? If so, warm shower and combing.

Sorry to be dumb but would a blocked duct stop me expressing, because I’m expressing fine when I can’t take it anymore

Stopping overnight feeding at this stage can often lead to engorgement, as prolactin levels (milk production hormone) are highest at night.

If you're in a lot of pain and hand expressing isn't relieving it, you could try a breast pump once a day to express until you're more comfortable & gradually reduce the amount of time you use it (to slow and eventually stop milk production).

Do whatever you can to prevent mastitis. Hope you're feeling better soon.

Sit in the bath and manually express as much as you can to feel soft and comfortable, the warm water will help
I wouldn't use a pump as this night over stimulate
There are drugs the gp can give you to help get rid of your supply if necessary but hand expressing over two or three days should see you through

La Leche League have a 24 hour helpline. Apply heat to affected area... face cloth soaked in boiled water and cooled a bit, then massage towards nipple.
Good luck!
