Hi all

My dd is having tonsils and adenoids removed next week and I'm looking for any info and advice ANYONE can give me.

She is having an afternoon op and staying in hospital overnight we live in the UK, things seem to be done different in the USA

I'm worried about what to expect after the operation, possible problems etc.

Any suggestions of things to feed her. I've been told already by the hospital that she will have to eat toast before they let her come home!

I've heard about things like losing the sense of taste, drinks coming out of the nose when swallowed, being sick etc

I've heard different stories about what days are the worst following surgery.

Anyone who has had a child go through this I would love to hear from and share your experiences - good or bad I want to know as much as possible so I can be prepared for the worst whilst hoping for the best.

Thanx guys x

Most hospitals have little booklets to show your child about what to expect when going into hospital and I think if you take their special toy in with you, the nurses will pretend the toy is having the op too. Have the children's dept not given you any information at all? I bet if you google it, you'll be able to find something helping children before they're admitted to hospital. They're usually really good with children in the UK pre and post op.

sorry forgot to say my dd is 8yrs old and very grown up for her age. She felt patronised by the nurse when we went to the pre-op appointment as she talked about giving her hand a little drink (the anaesthetic) I think I'm more worried than she is though kids have no concept of pain do they.

Hi MGM

I had a tonsillectomy when I was just slightly older than your daughter...just trying to remember how I felt

It was unfortunately a long time ago!

I remember eating tonnes of apricot fool, jelly and ice-cream on the ward. Yum

I don't recall having any problems losing the sense of taste or with drinks coming down the nose...ouch!

She'll need loads of reassurance and lots of extra love. I do remember being very jealous of the little girl in the bed next to mine who got very spoilt by her family when they came to visit ...I got very excited when my Mum arrived but she didn't bring me anything ..Silly I know, but it's always stayed with me. I wanted to feel special too I guess.
