My 3yo told someone they had a big fat tummy

I immediately told him 'no! we don't say that' and apologised to the man. Then I picked him up and explained to him that we don't say things like that to people as it might make them feel sad and it isn't very kind. When I said ok do you understand? He said no.

I just wanted the ground to swallow me up. Any tips on how to get the idea across?

I've had my son do this as well! They don't understand the emotions and society's stigma attached to fat yet.

My son has red hair and I explained to him he doesn't like people laughing at his hair, so not to laugh at other people because of their appearance.

Sorry I don't have any tips for you but my son does exactly the same thing! He did it yesterday at the swimming pool, there was a larger lady and he asked if she had a baby in her tummy like Mummy. It's so hard to know what to say to them or how to explain.. but they are just curious and everything is black and white to them!

Ah don't worry too much about it. I'm fat and a friends son said I had a big belly - the thing is .. it's true, why make a small child feel bad about pointing out a truth? It didn't bother me at all.

Kids don't have the negative connotations attached to words like that at this age. It's a description like tall, short, thin etc.

I had a 6yo ask me why I had chicken pox on Friday, I said they were just spots! His mum looked mortified, so I would not worry too muchSmile

Is it a peppy pig thing. It has been a while but I seem to remember them talking about daddy’s big fat tummy perhaps (I may be totally wrong, I remember him getting a lot of ‘oh silly daddy pig’ sort of comments so might be confused!

Your son probably just sees it as a factual comment and won’t realise why it would upset someone.

My 4yo niece told me I had the body shape of a teddy bear. Not flattering. But she was just being honest and it was probably a compliment to her 😄 It gave me a good kick up the backside though and spurred me on losing a stone recently.
