Reflux babies support thread?

Hi all

I think there are a few people on here struggling with reflux- wondered if anyone else would find it useful to have a thread where we could all rant / ask questions / share coping tips?

I'll start - my 11 week old has reflux. Symptoms are wanting to feed all the time but fussing during feeds (bobbing on and off, shoving hand deep into his mouth, crying, arching his back) foaming at the mouth, sickiness, general unsettledness.

I'm dairy free at the mo but not sure if it's making much difference, we tried gaviscon but it just seemed to make him constipated. We started ranitidine again last Friday at a higher dose and it seems to have improved nighttime sleep, but he's still showing all the symptoms during the day.

So first question, anyone who has found ranitidine has helped- how quickly did you see a difference?!

Brilliant topic thank you! I’m one of the ones that is majorly struggling. Unfortunately ranitidine hasn’t worked for my little one. He’s now on omeprazole and he still has reflux. He’s also on neocate formula for comps and gaviscon in his bottles.
He’s just sicked his omeprazole up so I have him another dose and he’s done the same again. It’s going to be a long night!

My DD is on Gaviscon for reflux and aptamil comfort for colic. Thankfully they seem to cancel each other out, so she doesn't get constipated. Prior to being on Gaviscon, she'd scream every time you came near her with a bottle and would arch her back in pain if I actually managed to get her to drink some, then she'd just throw most of it back up. Since the Gaviscon, I've got my happy smiley baby back! Smile

I'm breastfeeding so gaviscon was really difficult to get into him as well as constipating him. I'm hoping the ranitidine just needs a bit of time to start to work otherwise we'll be back to the docs.

How old are your babies? Mine is 11 weeks

Jazzy that’s great that you’ve found something that works for your little one Smile I’m extremely jealous!! Wink

My little one is 13 weeks tomorrow. From 2 weeks I knew something wasn’t right and was telling the doctors I thought he had a cos milk allergy but they wouldn’t believe me. He ended up in hospital and they confirmed a cows milk allergy. Poor little mite on regular milk was in so much pain and dehydrated due to extreme diarrhea. He’s on neocate now (wasn’t good on nutramigen) but it’s this pesky reflux that’s still causing problems

Smellybears · 16/04/2018 21:02

My little one has a real thing for trying to shove his entire hand in his mouth. I said to my mil the other day that it’s a reflux sign and she said that he’s discovering his hands. Made me feel a bit silly!

I read / heard that they can do it because they're trying to get at the burn at the back of their throats Sad my little one does it quite aggressively during / after a feed so I think it is related

How was your night @Smellybears?

Same as usual, he was unsettled but I think because I had it in my mind that it was going to be a bad night it hasn’t upset me as much. Thank you for asking! How’s your little one getting on with the ranitidine?

SendHelpAndGin · 18/04/2018 14:59

Mixed... seems a bit more settled during the day but the nights have been pretty bad. I'm getting him weighed on Monday so will check if he needs a higher dose

That’s what my little one was like on ranitidine to start, worse at night then it stopped working altogether which is how he ended up on omeprazole. He’s putting weight on though which I’m pleased about. He’s just so sick though but I’ve been told by the feeding nurse to ‘ride it out’.
Hopefully your little one is gaining weight Flowers
