Switching back to Comfort Milk

Was wondering if anyone had any advice. Basically my LO was on Aptamil comfort milk from 5 weeks until 12 when I was told by a HV that he shouldn’t stay on it and to just switch him back to Aptamil 1. I had put him on it as he had been so uncomfortable with wind and also constipated. He took to it really well with no issues. Since I’ve put him back on Aptamil 1 he has been straining with wind again and averaging one poo a week and really uncomfortable as he clearly needs to poo more often. I’m so tempted to switch him back as have given it 3 weeks and am now putting Colief in the normal milk anyway which seems to help a bit with the wind but is a complete pain in the arse!!

Just wondering if anyone else has been given same advice or if their LO stayed on comfort? I don’t want to make him lactose intolerant if that makes sense but also don’t want him uncomfortable....

Did the HV say why she thinks he shouldn’t be on it for too long? Also, I don’t think you need to worry about giving him an allergy to lactose as the milk does contain the sugar plus I haven’t seen any research saying it is a contributing factor Smile

I was told it was something to do with the things they add to it. However I genuinely believe he was better on that milk. I’ve been told he will get used to normal formula but it’s been nearly four weeks now and he is more unsettled, more reflux and constipated. I guess I am answering my own question really aren’t I?! My DS only ever had comfort milk until he was around 12m and went on to cows milk. No one ever commented. He’s 2.5 now and eats loads of dairy so doesn’t seem to have caused any issues

My ds was on aptamil comfort for 12 months and then cows milk after a year old like pp. he was under consult care because he was prem. And was told that's what he's used to. So best to keep him on that after his wind and toilet problems stopped.

I when I 1st raised the comfort milk with the Gp because of his constipation she dismissed it, saying it didn't work etc etc. I ignored because he was doing better and seemed more comfortable. Next time we seen the consultant, she said I did the right thing and shock her head at the GP saying that.

It's your baby you know them best do what you think is right for them.

The comfort Milk is made with whey protein which has been partly hydrolysed. This means that the protein has been partly broken down. If your LO is finding normal formula more difficult, has anyone suggested that they they may have Cow’s Milk Protein Allergy (CMPA). Usually if you have CMPA you have less of a reaction to hydrolysed milk protein.

My LO was on comfort milk until around 5 months. She then was fine to switch back to normal formula and had been fine on cows milk since she turned one.
