Tetris makes a Mathematician? Wives tale or true?

Today at the shops a guy made the comment "looks like he'll be a Mathematician" when he saw my toddler winning at Tetris. It happens fairly often when hes playing, but since i've been thinking alot about school recently its got me wondering. Is it just an old wives tale or does Tetris ability as a child actually have any bearing on future maths ability?

It’s bollocks. And you’ll hear a lot more of that kind of stuff, so be prepared.

Reiltin · 08/04/2018 21:25

Tetris is a logic game and you need to think a few steps ahead to do well. But that logic and forward-planning can be used in a variety of professions.

That's what i was thinking. I always assumed it was just a thing people said but you do need logic skills for it so now i'm thinking maybe theres something in it?

I have never heard of any of that! I’m the bomb at Tetris but my maths is awful!

SprogletsMum · 08/04/2018 21:56

I used to be amazing at maths at school but I'm awful at Tetris.

ApplesTheHare · 08/04/2018 21:57

Nonsense I'm afraid.

TheHumanMothboy · 08/04/2018 22:18

Both MIL and I are amazing at Tetris, but whilst we're both decent at arithmetic, neither of us will ever be a mathematician!
Spatial awareness though, we're your women!

BertieBotts · 08/04/2018 22:19

It's more thinking ahead than logic I think.

woodlanddreamer · 08/04/2018 22:24

My DD is incredible at Tetris, better than anyone I have ever seen. She's bloody hopeless at maths Grin

0h · 08/04/2018 22:26

I'm Tetris Queen but have always had to work hard at maths.

RBBMummy · 09/04/2018 19:59

Huh, interesting.

It's definitely spatial awareness rather than maths per se.

SoyDora · 09/04/2018 20:01

I’m amazing at Tetris.
Maths is not my strong point.

AsAProfessionalFekko · 09/04/2018 20:04

I am very good at this type of visual logic puzzle but bloody awful at maths!

DesignedForLife · 10/04/2018 15:26

I would think spacial awareness and foreword planning more than maths.

sirfredfredgeorge · 10/04/2018 16:21

tetris requires almost no working memory demands, working memory is hugely correlated with maths ability.

I cannot see how a mechanism could link the two.

KoshaMangsho · 10/04/2018 16:23

I am exceptional at Tetris and very poor at Maths. My 6 year old can do Y3/4 Maths and does not play any games and would be rubbish at Tetris.

Airbiscuits · 11/04/2018 21:52

I’m very good at both maths and Tetris

With N=1, that proves jack shit

MirandaWest · 11/04/2018 21:53

I’m good at maths.

Little spatial awareness
