What's your course?

If Hell freezes over etc, I will be a student in september.

In my personal statement, I wrote about what led me to the course I had chosen, which involved a career change. I wrote about recent study, having been out of education for nearly 20 years . I wrote from a 'this is how I found this/felt about this' point of view, rather than 'these are the facts.'

I can blether on at length on this topic, having written my own and (shhhh) someone else's. I was told both personal statements were fine, btw.

Want to do mine too?

It's Nursing...

I wrote mainly about what the course I was applying for meant to me, what I planned to do with it and also used things such as voluntary work and my past career / etc to give a snapshot of how I am (supposedly) hardworking and likely to succeed.

Am about to go into year 3 soon [help]

OK, here are some notes I made before writing my ps. I think this was originally c&p'ed from the interweb, but no idea where I found it, I'm afraid.

Personal Statement Questions

? Why do you want to become a nurse?
? What qualities do I have that would be an asset?
? What led me to nursing?
? Reasons for choosing the institutions listed?
? What interests me about nursing?
? What is my relevant work experience?
? What interests me in my current course?
? What am I particularly enjoying on my current course/recent study?
? What are my future plans?
? What are my social/leisure interests?

Paragraph 1: Introduction, the parts of nursing I'm interested in and why
Paragraph 2: What I had done related to my subject which wasn't on the NMAS form
Paragraphs 3 and 4: work experience and things I had done in school/college/relevant work
Paragraph 5: My interests outside of study/education
Paragraph 6: My goal of going to university and closing comment

lunavix · 11/05/2007 10:45

Right I've started.... could anyone have a look at it for me?

OP posts:
WanderingTrolley · 11/05/2007 10:52

I'll have a look.

I've read through mine, here's a summary:

Para 1: What I had done since leaving school (work for me, mostly, but you could include raising family, etc. I had a sentence mentioning that I?d spent time travelling.)
Para 2: How this led me to decide on a new career in nursing
Para 3: Looking forward to nursing and learning new skills; applying skills learnt in current job (childcare) to nursing; what I?ve enjoyed in recent study (e.g. Access course, relevant evening course); learning about my strengths and weaknesses and acting upon that; what?s been a challenge.
Para 4: Why I picked adult/child etc nursing; what interests me and why I think that pathway would suit me; how I investigated this (shadowing, working as HCA, talking to nurses in this field)
Para 5: Things not on NMAS form; interests etc. A short paragraph on mine, I?m very dull.
Para 6: Closing: looking forward to nursing, confident I will enjoy it.

I made several allusions to patient care, further study, that I was open minded in my approach, working as a team member etc.

Now I?ve read it again (I wrote it some time ago) I sound great. They will think me mature, confident and intelligent; possessing finely-honed communicative skills, the ability to shoulder weighty responsibility and make decisions of far-reaching consequence; a team player who is popular, caring and helpful.

They must never find out what I?m really like.

lunavix · 11/05/2007 10:55

lol I'm in childcare too! What branch of nursing are you going into?

I'm applying for child nursing but the Unis have warned me I'm probably too late....

If you can please email me dark willow girl @ yahoo.co.uk (minus the spaces) and I could email you mine to look at that would be fantastic....

Who did you use as referees? And which uni you going to?

Hiya

I stated why I was interested in the course I had applied for [Journalism] Also that I was a mum, actually that was quite important for me to include as they would know I was good at time keeping, taking responsibility for things etc....

I mentioned my previous courses, why I had applied to the uni's had applied for. I included my interests & also any voluntary work I had done up until then.

Also included that I had started the first newspaper at my primary school that was still up & running now, but due to family commitments had left starting uni until later in life which meant I could give the degree course my full attention now

HTH & good luck!!

I am just about to finish my second year, have exams next week & also about to fill in my loan form for next year!
