Baby gros much better than clothes

Why do people dress newborn babies in 'proper clothes' My baby has been living in baby gros and at 3 months I plan to continue for some time. I will get some short rompers for the summer.

I was bought some outfits, but only worn once, trousers were tight and uncomfy- left elastic marks on baby and hes not particularly wide.

Babies nap quite a bit and have a ridiculous amount of nappy changes. Surely baby grows are much more practical and suitable.

I dressed DD in babygrows for the first 8 weeks or so, but then got bored of them and fed up of all the bloody poppers. I love picking out little outfits for her. I wouldn't put her in jeans or anything stiff, she mainly wears soft jersey leggings and tops/cardigans during the day, then babygrows at night. I see them as pyjamas and think it's a bit odd when older babies wear them all the time, but then I wouldn't judge the parents for it. Horses for courses and all that.

Also if you do a lot of babywearing then sleepsuits really aren't suitable as they squish the feet. And as for babies napping a lot, please have a word with my DD as she clearly didn't get the memo Grin

Thanks everyone this has given me food for thought and there were definitely some things I had not thought about in terms of practicality- walking, crawling etc.

As for babies napping a lot- I was careful to put quite a bit as I have trouble getting mine off in the day too.

Laugh all you want but my ds both slept through from early on and I didn't have to soothe them to sleep etc. I believe dressing them differently for night and day helped with that. Smile

Oh well someone forgot to tell my baby that Never as despite having different clothes for day and night she didn't sleep through until she was 9 months old.

Sorry, I think you just got lucky Grin

Given that having since form if bedtime routine (bath, massage, book, whatever), is often considered helpful for sleep patterns, why in earth shouldn't that incorporate being changed into night clothes. My baby gets sleepy when she is put in her gro bag, they can make these sorts of associations sometimes, and then it can help. Not for all babies, but for some.

DD had hip dysplasia and had to wear a pavlik harness. This meant she could only wear dresses and skirts for 12 weeks so I am rather pleased all those things were available in the shops in teeny sizes!

3stonedown · 09/04/2018 12:14

OP the Joules and Blade and Rose leggings are soft and don't dig in. I found to jojo maman bebe ones too tight.

My DD has long legs and short arms so baby grows were a bit of a nightmare

MrPotatosGirlfriend · 09/04/2018 12:29

The best baby grows we had were from gap with a zip, so much easier than poppers!

We did love the soft trousers / bodysuit combo too through.

I can't get my 1yr old to keep socks on, so as she's got older its been soft dress and tights with grippy feet. Or cold toes!

greenhills2015 · 09/04/2018 13:13

100% agree! Baby grows are so practical and tops etc never seem to sit right on little babies

jcutts · 09/04/2018 13:17

I'm a baby grow fan. I think babies should look like babies for as long as possible. They've got years ahead to be dressed up.

“I can't get my 1yr old to keep socks on, so as she's got older its been soft dress and tights with grippy feet. Or cold toes!”

Get some sock-ons! Genius invention.

DailyMailFail101 · 09/04/2018 13:44

Yes I’m all for babygrows somebody bought my newborn a shirt and jeans, I returned it for a pack of babygrows, who has the time and patients for babies in shirts and jeans??

BestBeforeYesterday · 09/04/2018 13:52

Babygrows look much cuter (as long as they're tiny) than clothes imo, but they're much less practical. All those poppers....! I got sick of them quickly.

JessieMcJessie · 09/04/2018 15:04

I loved the Bond’s wonder suit that I got for my DS - a zip up babygro with feet that could be folded up or down so he could sleep with feet covered at night and toddle in bare feet in the daytime. They are £££ though. I found a cheaper version though in a shop called Lindex, who sell online. It’s a scandi chain similar to H&M.
For summer, I bought a three pack of these from Next and they were fab, we called them his Edwardian Bathing suits.

I second sock-Ons, brilliant.

TroubledLichen · 09/04/2018 15:18

I don’t expect you’ll last with babygrows until 1, as soon they’re rolling then leggings become a godsend! It took me a good 5 minutes to wrestle DD 10 months into a sleepsuit with poppers last night (we have great baby gap ones with a zip but they were all in the wash). She’s spent most of the winter months in tights and dresses as she kept pulling off her socks and getting cold toes and I couldn’t face poppers at every nappy change! She is finally over the sock pulling off phase though so we’ve gone back to leggings now which are definitely the easiest when she’s trying to crawl away during changes.

In short, dress your baby in whatever you find easiest but be prepared for that to change as they get older!

bananasandwicheseveryday · 09/04/2018 15:23

My dcs never wore babygros. I didn't like them and, TBH, I still don't. There was a wonderful choice of baby clothes when dcs were little - rompers, lovely soft dungaree type garments, soft trousers. All lovely and much more practical for my two babies who were very long and who had big feet.
I used to love getting them dressed every day.

LRL2017 · 09/04/2018 15:29

I agree in the beginning it was easier and my little girl took until she was 3 months to go in to 0-3 clothes so lived mostly in baby grows, but from then she wears either tops and leggings or dresses every day.

Keepingupwiththejonesys · 09/04/2018 17:19

Mine wore outfits from day one and babygros for bed. Stayed in babygros if we stayed in but otherwise had an outfit. They were plenty comfy, the outfits nice and soft. Its personal preference really isn't it

Keepingupwiththejonesys · 09/04/2018 17:25

The absolutely adorable soft dungaree sets they do in almost all shops don't have the issue of waistbands digging in. Though tbh I've never had that issue and my babies were all pretty big

hazeyjane · 09/04/2018 17:27

All mine were a combination of Babygro's, sleep suits, leggings, dungarees, dresses, cords, jeans......from when they were tiny (tbh most of their outfits were whatever was in the vast bags of hand me downs we seemed to get!)
They seemed to survive (even the jeans...which seem to be viewed as torture devices on mumsnet!)

N2986 · 09/04/2018 19:40

Eesh it's a bit heated on here! I like babygros for the first couple of weeks with pretty little cardigans over the top. After that theyre 100% in outfits during the day. I love it. Have to enjoy it before they start dictating what they wear.

If you use babygros exclusively, great, but if I'm honest, if I saw a one year old out in one of assume it was poorly or something Smile

ScurfyTwiglet · 09/04/2018 19:48

I go with zip-through babygrows for the (in my opinion) best of both worlds. No poppers, nice and easy to do up and no sore fingers. I just bought 3 of these today when I saw them in Sainsbo's: tuclothing.sainsburys.co.uk/p/2-Pack-Grey-Milk-Print-Sleepsuits-%280-24-months%29/132663471-Grey

Shutupanddance1 · 09/04/2018 19:51

Baby Gros are lovely but when DD1 started to crawl I had to change her. She’d get herself all tangled up in the legs as theyd come loose as she’d try to shuffle herself along Confused.

She’s nearly 2 now and her daily outfit is usually just Tshirt and leggings - comfy, let’s her tumble, climb etc
