Baby gros much better than clothes

Why do people dress newborn babies in 'proper clothes' My baby has been living in baby gros and at 3 months I plan to continue for some time. I will get some short rompers for the summer.

I was bought some outfits, but only worn once, trousers were tight and uncomfy- left elastic marks on baby and hes not particularly wide.

Babies nap quite a bit and have a ridiculous amount of nappy changes. Surely baby grows are much more practical and suitable.

I find sleepsuits easier but I quite like leggings/ joggers and tops too. I don’t think one type of clothes are better than others,

dotdotdotmustdash · 08/04/2018 16:40

Both of mine crawled at 6 months and babygros were an absolute pain as they crawled out of the legs and got into a tangle. I went with long-sleeved vests and soft trousers and left the babygros for bedtimes.

Agree my DD still practically lives in them at 11 months! Starting nursery soon though so think I will have to dress her in comfy leggings and tops for that.

Your first post reads a little 'my way is the only right way'. You might get on better to realise that different approaches suit different families for different reasons. Apologies if I have taken what you said the wrong way.
No, of course I think my way is the right way else I wouldn't be doing it! [sceptical] I'm not here to make friends.
I agree leggings and tops are comfy and I say I want to continue with baby grows until one year as that is average for walking. If my baby starts walking earlier then I will be taking him out of sleepsuits earlier.

Love the ones with zips- they are brill, but often expensive. I've seen Tesco has done one with a zip though. If anyone knows any other cheapies with zips please let me know- happy to pay Next prices.

See point about dresses, but my little one can't wear dresses- no doubt someone will come along and tell me I'm wrong on this.

Anyway babygros can start to get in their way when they're crawling unless they fit absolutely perfectly, and having bare feet makes learning to crawl easier as well. DS was crawling at 6 months so depending on how much of a hurry to get around your DC is you might not get close to a year.

PickingOak · 08/04/2018 18:07

I had warmth issues with baby gros, unless they were fleecy or padded ones (which are genius inventions). The thing with soft trousers was that I could put tights on underneath so dd had two layers on her legs.

Didntcomeheretofuckspiders · 08/04/2018 18:08

I do think cute jersey trousers or leggings (think baby Gap style) with a vest are very practical and comfy. Jeans and dresses on the other hand seem mad to me!

Oly5 · 08/04/2018 18:08

Mine start to wear soft outfits from five months. Babygros for night time. Felt right for us

AriadneThread · 08/04/2018 18:09

My DD is 6m and I dread the day I can't get away with baby grows. She has tons of other clothes, all unworn.

Why do people dress newborn babies in 'proper clothes'

Very easy answer to that question. As Billie Piper once said, because we want to.

rubyroot · 08/04/2018 18:12

See your point Muddyforest- may have to convert earlier than planned. Baby is very eager to move around already. If anyone knows of any trousers which aren't tight around waist please let me know as ones worn so far were very tight and left marks.

Mine were in babygros the best part of their first year. Or vests (with jumper/cardi over as appropriate) and soft trousers/leggings/tights.

Jeans/button-up shirts/flouncy uncomfortable dresses and headbands Hmm for babies are ridiculous and look dreadful.

userabcname · 08/04/2018 18:14

I size up with joggers and trousers. DS is 10 months but I buy 12-18 month trousers. I find Tesco to be slim fit, Primark and George are looser. I don't really buy baby clothes from anywhere else tbh.

Why would anyone use Billie Piper lyrics as words of wisdom? Grin

imo babygrows are for sleeping in, when i see babies in babygrows in the day i just think the parents cba to dress them properly.

MuddyForestWalks · 08/04/2018 18:17

rubyroot Blade & Rose, and Jojo Maman Bebe do lovely soft knitted leggings. Also DS has some incredibly soft joggers from Asda and Next with drawstring waists.

rubyroot · 08/04/2018 18:19

Will look into those muddy, Thanks

I like rompers during the day but babygros are pyjamas to me. I like the variety of clothes for baby and I enjoyed getting him dressed in different outfits. DH is now responsible for dressing him at 1.5 and he also enjoys getting him dressed.

I also really hate changing nappies in baby gros. It really pisses me off with the number of poppers! Much rather 3 poppers and some leggings.

rubyroot · 08/04/2018 18:20

Thanks Katniss

Just buy stuff in jersey fabric, leggings and joggers and those harem style trousers with a stretchy waist. I love a baby fro but separates are much easier as they get a few months older, if they drool a lot/sick up/spill food when weaning its good to whip a top off and not the full outfit. Also leggings and separate tops over a vest are good for regulating temperature so when it gets warmer you can take layers off as it gets warmer/inside shops etc. Also I had DS in a sling a lot and babygros with toes can ride up and bed little toes, so I used to prefer footless soft woolly leggings (it was winter) and socks. And I agree to the crawling with bare feet is easier.

Also people can dress their kids in whatever they want. And baby jeans are usually made of a very soft jean like fabric rather than thick hard denim!

Sleeplikeasloth · 08/04/2018 18:24

Name Change 30, there is something to be said for firmly differentiating day and night, and babygrows at night only does reinforce that. We've only ever done them at night, and have a good sleeper. Probably coincidence, and on its own not that powerful, but every little helps.

Makingworkwork · 08/04/2018 18:28

I kept DD in babygrows for Pj until she was about 6 months because I thought they were cute and I wanted to enjoy her being a baby. Looking back it was ridiculous as I had to fight to crawling child ready for bed every night. I should have given up on them much earlier.

OP we find H&M joggers good value. Elasticated drawstring waist and roomy around the bum. If you need to size up for the waist and the legs are too long, you can always fold them up at the bottom. H&M joggers fit DS well. He used to be chubby but is a bit slimmer and longer now he’s moving, although we put him in cloth nappies which are a bit more bulky than disposables.

So many people bought us jeans and denim dungarees for him, all unworn. Most of them are really slim around the bum, not much room for a disposable nappy let alone a cloth one. The material isn’t stretchy either. They just seem so uncomfortable and would be a nightmare to get on and off.

If I had a girl I’d probably put her in one or two dresses for the cute factor but they don’t seem very practical either.
