Switching from sleeping bag to duvet, how old??

MummyBear90 · 15/03/2018 16:24

My DD is currently in a sleeping bag (16 months) but she’s quite big for her age and I’m wondering if it’s maybe time to consider changing her over to a cot duvet and pillow?! How old were your little ones when you did the change?!

Thanks in advance!!

Following this! I Haven't a clue either. I was wondering this earlier and my DS is only nearing 9 months. He just seems so restricted and uncomfortable in it

scaredofthecity · 15/03/2018 16:28

At about a year, I don't think it's recommended before then.

RNBrie · 15/03/2018 16:29

For saftey reasons the recommendation is no pillow or duvet till they are 1. At 9months, I'd try a bigger bag.

My first two had duvets and pillows from just after 1 - because they kept standing up and falling over in their cots and banging their heads.

My third has not had this problem, she's nearly 2 now and still in her bag. We tried to get her out of it a couple of months ago but she cried a lot... we've given her a pillow and a duvet, both of which she likes, but we haven't managed to get her out of the bag yet!

Mine is still in a sleeping bag at 16 months too. He just Wiggles so much. When I put him down he crawls around the cot to get comfy, so I can't imagine using a duvet yet. Sorry not much help

NameChangeDestroyer · 15/03/2018 16:34

My dd had a pillow and duvet at 27 months (sorry for months but I think it's relevant in this situation!). We only actually gave her the duvet as she was very sick one night and I'd run out of sleeping bags and the next day she refused to go back in her sleeping bag.

PurplePotatoes · 15/03/2018 16:35

My D'S is 18 months and still in a sleeping bag. I can't remember what age we gave DD a quilt and pillow, I'm sure it was older than DS as she wriggled around all over the bed but actually as soon as she got a pillow she never moved down the bed again!

Chienrouge · 15/03/2018 16:35

DD1 was 18 months, DD2 was 15 months. I did a couple of weeks with the duvet in the cot then took the sides off the cot.

yellowisthecolour · 15/03/2018 16:36

I'm curious about this too. My 18 month twins grew out of their bags recently but we've not given them duvets, we've just put them in warm pyjamas with vests underneath and they sleep fine, I think they prefer it actually.
Not sure when to introduce duvet & pillow, I think we might wait until the autumn/winter now so they'll be 2yrs+

TwittleBee · 15/03/2018 16:49

RNBrie don't worry I wasn't suggesting he moves to one now! Just thinking surely as he gets bigger he will find it more and more restricting. He is currently in a 9+ gro bag. Don't think a 12+ one would be suitable considering he actually measures short for his age. I know I would find is bloody annoy having something wrapped round me like that haha.

I just googled and they sell Gro Bags up the age of 10!! Shock SO maybe it is a case of moving them when they are ready?

DappledThings · 15/03/2018 17:28

DS is just turned 2 and we haven't thought about it yet. Like a PP said he wriggles around the cot so much I can't see how a duvet would work for him right now

MustBeThursday · 15/03/2018 17:35

DD was nearly 3. She has a duvet and pillow but they still generally don't stay on the bed when she's in it and she's been using them for a year.

usercantsleep · 15/03/2018 17:42

I don't follow sorry.... do you not want to buy them the next size bag up?!

dementedpixie · 15/03/2018 17:45

Mine had a sleeping bag until 2 and a half. They do bigger sized bags

Tidypidy · 15/03/2018 17:47

We swapped to duvets when they went into bed from cot. DD was 18 months, DS1 was 2.5 and DS2 was also 2.5.

childmindingmumof3 · 15/03/2018 17:49

12 months for mine, pillow and duvet in the cot.

Pinklady1981 · 15/03/2018 17:52

My son was around 2yrs when he switch from a sleeping bag to a gro to bed duvet. They are amazing as they zip on and when's it's cold it means they won't get cold if the overs came off.

MummyBear90 · 15/03/2018 17:54

Thanks for all the replies!! We’ve bought her a duvet and pillow set so going to trial it over nap times to see how she goes! She moves around a lot but I just think she looks so uncomfortable with her sleeping bag all twisted up!! She’s woken up a few times during the night recently which isn’t like her at all and I’m wondering if it’s due to her getting all tangled! I’ll keep you all updated as to how I get on as I can see some of you are unsure of what to do too :) x

Jojo maman are good for bigger bags in case anyone is looking. The toddler grobags are meant to be up to 36mo but both of my DSs had grown out of those by about 18mo.

DS2 is 25mo and is currently in a Jojo one that's meant to be up to age 4- although the has nearly grown out of that too. I'm going to put him into a duvet at some stage in April- once this cold weather goes!

I have a little duvet set by the gro company that zips up either side onto the fitted sheet. I used it for DS1 and it worked well as a transition from grobag to duvet.

IWouldLikeToKnow · 15/03/2018 20:15

My son was in his bed before he started using a duvet and pillow. So he was 2 at the time.

namaste86 · 15/03/2018 20:38

My son has just turned 1. He's still in a sleeping bag during the night, but he's almost filling his sleeping bag which goes to 36m as he's so tall Hmm

He's been using a duvet for naps for a couple of weeks and its going well, so I think once he's truly outgrown his sleeping bag, we won't be replacing it. He doesn't have a pillow yet as he sleeps on his front.

Ilovemybaby91 · 15/03/2018 20:46

My daughter is almost 9 months & we co sleep. She doesn't wear a sleeping bag anymore because my blanket would always ends up over her & she'd get too hot. So she shares the blanket with me... i know it's not recommended but it works for us. She 100% sleeps much better when she isn't restricted in a bag, because she is a massive star fish. Star but yeah... they're safe to use from 1yo I've read. If you wanna go by the book Grin

lizzyfrombedlam · 17/03/2018 07:29

16 months for us. One night he simply refused to use his sleeping bag. The next night he slept fine with a duvet and pillow.

foxessocks · 17/03/2018 07:33

I've just bought my 18 month old a size 18 months to 2 years sleeping bag. My dd was in a sleeping bag until about 2 and then we converted her cot to a cot bed and she has pillow and duvet. Both my dc love their sleeping bags my now 4 yo still cuddles hers at night!

unicornpoopoop · 17/03/2018 07:43

About 18 months but we got the toddler duvet set from IKEA so it's a lot smaller and fits a cot

Wetcappuccino · 17/03/2018 07:56

DD did not change from cot to bed until she was 2.5 and was in a sleeping bag until then too
