17 yo dd wants tattoo, i dont have a problem with them but shes a bit young , what should i do?

??? I have tattoos, i dont regret them but wouldht have them again. If i dont go along with her etc, will she just go and have it done anyway, at least if i consent i have some control over where it is placed and the hygeine etc. Or should i put my foot down. This is a birthday present she is asking for.

for her 17th birthday? i dont think most repuatble tattooist will do it on someone under 18

For her 18th? Aren't they legal from 18? I'd be inclined to let her (so I could patrol hygiene etc) only if I though she would go and get it done anyway

DD also wanted this for her 17th - I don't like the idea because I don't want her to get it at a place that will do it when she's under 18. Trouble is DH had already said he didn't see why not. I said I wouldn't give it to her for her birthday, and so far she hasn't yet gone to get it, though she does keep drawing designs in a rather pointed way.....

i had mine when i was about 19, i had one done on my foot, at the top of my toes. i would defo recommend that she has it in an easily hidden place like that if you do decide to let her..

I hate them. My daughter had their navals pierced in secret and kept that hidden for ages. Then one daughter had a tattoo but I think she was 19 and it's a small star on her inner wrist. Her friend got an awful one done on the outer arm which almost killed her mother imaginging that arm in a white short wedding dress in due course etc which the friend now wishes she didn't have.

I don't think she should expect you to agree in the way of making it a present. I said I didn't agree but it was her body and the one she got I can live with. A small plaster or watch covers it anyway. Also I think hers lasts 4 years - a semi permanent one which is a better compromise

I had a tattoo at 17 with my mums consent. It was on my lower back so it's easily hidden and was done at a reputable parlour. A few of my friends went to some dodgy guys house to get theirs done without their parents knowledge. If you think she is going to go ahead and get one anyway I would definitly go along with her so you can have some input to what she gets. I'm 24 now, btw, and don't regret getting mine at all.

she is 16 just now and its ileagal under 18 i think. But my concern is, that if idont allow it and insist on accomanying her then i will run the risk of her going somewhere dodgy to have it done behind my back. Also, i can dictate where it goes. I said she had to have it done on the shoulder blade (partly because that is where it can be hidden, but can be seen in strappy top if she wants, but also cos it really hurts there and may put her off future attempts!)

shoulder blade, be wearyof wedding dresses, it looks awful walking down the isle with a tatoo on the back shoulder when someone is wearing a strapless dress.

why not the lower back that can be trul covered.

have there not been some health scares with henna tattoos? My daughter is a stubborn bint, I cant see her wanting to make that compromise! I think that tattoos have become too mainstream to be considered different and interesting. Apparently she has designed her own but if i could have my time over i would have waited until i could have had something spectacular TBH as i am stuck with a series of small ill thought out tattoos, that make me look like a middle aged chav! When of course i am uber cool and totally alpha mummy material (yeah right).

yes penelope, good point, plus, thats gotta hurt hasnt it! But then we are talking about a girl who has multiple facial peircings and is mithering me to allow her to have her sternum, yes her sternum, peirced. Thing is, she used to be such a sweet young thing, now she has turned out to be...................just like her mother!!!!

I had my first tattoo when i was 17. The tattoo parlour was really hygenic and I only had a small swallow on my shoulder blade. I had some more added to it years later. She will have to sign a form to say that she is over 18, thats what i had to do.

What about on her foot? When she wears sandals it will still be visible if she wants to show it off. A friend of mine hasd three stars tattooed on ehr foot and it looked really pretty.

try and come to some agreement with her, whether thats to wait till she is 18 or get something small and discreet just now, my parents would not let me get one at 17 so i wen behind there back to somewhere cheap and it was a total mess that had to be coverd up by someone else.

when my dds are older i will handle it in a total diffrent way.

If you don't mind her having it done then go with her and say she is 18, they won't question it as you are her mother.

I think they have to be 18. Wouldn't be my choice but if she really wants one it is better for you to go together.

Perhaps if she knew how painful it was she might be put off. You have to follow it through once they start, advise her to get something really small to start with to see if she likes it. She may not be able to stand the pain if she chooses anything too big.
I recently had another one and I nearly jumped off the seat. Thank heavens it goes numb after a while.

I would never agree to my daughter having a tattoo.

It's illegal until she's 18.

I had my first tatoo at 17. I do love all my tatoos as part of my history. They map my lifes events.

I think the 17/18 thing is semantics. So long as she is 100% sure that she is happy with the design and location and will be able to hide it if she so choses there's no problem.

I knew at 17 that I would never be wearing a pretty pretty wedding dress, and even if I ever did, I wouldn't give a stuff if anyone saw my tatto.

There are some awfully naff tatoos about like a tweety pie on the boob (seen a few of those!) but there are also loads of pretty or stunning celtic designs.

Help her chose and supervise if you can so you're both happy.
