Newborn Q's!

My baby is 3 weeks old and I have a couple of things niggling me that I have no one to ask about, so I hope its ok to post them here -

My baby always seems warm. In the evening our heating comes on and me and DH are always freezing so thankful for it but 10 mins after it comes on baby is hot and I have to take his leggings or sleepsuit legs off. He gets too hot during the day if I dress him in more than one layer (i.e vest and jumper or sleepsuit) so we stick to long sleeved vest, leggings and socks. Does this sound ok? I always feel chilly but I guess he is just a warm baby.

He has a weird routine of waking up in the morning, having a 4oz bottle (formula feeding) then staying awake for about an hour gurgling and looking around and then he will get grizzly and want another bottle to go to sleep with but he will literally drink 50ml-1oz of it and he'll be out. I just tried giving him a teat not attached to a bottle and got the same results (a dummy didn't work) is this ok, or would it mean he sucked in too much air? It sounds silly but we're wasting so much formula as he will only ever take a tiny bit before sleeping.

Thanks in advance for any responses!

Only you know your baby best, if he’s a warm baby then he’ll be fine, if he feels okay to you then he’s okay.

Maybe keep preserving with the dummy?

And congratulations on your squishy newborn!

At 3 weeks I wouldn’t withhold any feeds, their tummies are tiny so yes the little feed is still necessary. Just make up 2oz at the second feed, you can always make more if he’s still hungry.

He might just be a warm baby! Keep him in cotton to keep him cool and don’t worry about vests under sleepsuits if he’s toasty. Check temp on chest, if he feels too hot there take off a layer.

Our baby is 16 weeks and we've only just got to the stage where he finishes most of his bottles. We wasted so much formula in those early days as he needed his milk for comfort and to help him nap. This sounds totally normal.

My ds is also a very warm baby, his temperature is always a nice normal 36 so he's clearly well , but he hates too many layers so during the day he wears a short sleeved vest and trousers with feet.

Everything you describe sounds fine , just keep listening to your baby's needsSmile

Maybe you could get some of the ready made bottles that last 24hrs when opened for the 1-2oz top up, comfort feeds. That way it's ready immediately and you don't have to make full feeds or wait for fresh feeds to cool.

jhb2013 · 21/02/2018 20:56

Why don’t you make up a larger first feed and then offer him the rest of it? You can keep formula at room temperature for up to 1.5 hours so that should work out.

@jhb2013 I always thought it was 1 hour?

@Panda81 I think i might do that.

I was so worried about overheating with my first one but she was always warm and still would happily walk around in a vest while I'm shivering under a blanket. Second one is also quite hot and sweaty. Some just run warmer.

bbearshh · 23/02/2018 09:33

@mamahanji thank you, that reassures me a bit! he's happiest in a vest and nothing else in the evening, even in this freezing weather! and he kicks blankets off if we put them on him. funny little guy.
