Hi,

My 5 week old little boy seems to have a congested nose. I notice it more when he’s laying down on a night.

What can I do to help him ease the congestion?

I’ve hard a humidifier would b able to help but can I use this in my room now with him?

Any tips would be appreciated!

Hi you can but snuffle babe vapour rub especially for babies and rub alittle on his chest. You can also buy baby olbas oil and put a few drops into a little bit water and add to as humidifier. This is fine and safe to use in the room with your baby. I used to do this when ds was younger and it worked great together with the Vapour rub.

Also a saline nasal spray is good to clear your babies nose. It tickles and they don’t like it but it worked wonders and helps gently dislodge anything in the nose.

Some time in the bathroom with the hot shower running helps & if BF squirt some up his nose! Weird but works!

Hi
Congrats on your baby boy x
Humidifier is good, we use ours a lot with our girl, we just use water most of the time without any oils in it.. it helped her with her bronchiolitis ..
Saline spray - just check it's ok to use for small babies.
Apart from that Iam not sure if you can give much to such a young baby it's best to check with HV/Gp
How is he fed? Our girl is formula fed and is more phlegmy as opposed to her friend who is breast only. They can be more bunged up on formula ...
Hope some this is of some help x

Pop a folded towel under mattress so they are slightly tilted instead of them been flat.

Run a hot bath/shower and shut the bathroom door. Sit him in the steamy room for a while. Snuffle baby on the soles of his feet before you put his baby grow on.

The saline spray like the olbas oil and snuffle babe vapour rub are from birth and in the baby section of any supermarket.

Second the bed propping! It does help

My little twin was constantly congested and sounded like a warthog at all times - he ended up being diagnosed with enlarged adenoids.

It's probably just a cold, but if they sound really congested without actually having many secretions, mention it to the doctor.

Sterimar is the best saline nose spray I've found (and easier to use than the pump type bottles like calpol saline spray). A nose Frida type nasal aspirator is pretty crucial too.

I think the NHS guidelines say something like you should see a doctor if your baby gets a bug and is under 6 weeks - worth having a look to see what it says. and keep an eye on temperature too.

Congested nose could be a sign of silent reflux
