Why won't DS use the potty if he's wearing clothes ?

DS is 3.5 and started potty training at the beginning of last August.

He was dry after 2 days, and was able to stay dry at night as well .

But pooing has never been right. We sometimes leave his bottom half naked at home (if we know he needs to poo) and he will seek out the potty (if downstairs) or toilet (if upstairs) and do it in there no problem. But if he is wearing pants, he just poos in them and tells me afterwards. He used to not mind it (prob similar sensation to wearing a nappy ?), but he really hates it now, so I don't get why he doesn't at least tell me he needs to go or try to go himself !!!

We always react really positively when he goes on the potty and are sympathetic when he does it in his pants (he gets quite upset about it), so don't think it's about attention. We have tried explaining that he needs to find the potty like he does when he's nt wearing pants, but hasn't made any difference.

Any suggestions please ? I'm finding it really frustrating now and don't want it to become a negative 'issue'.

Had a similar problem with DS1 who I let go commando for about 6 months after potty training. He wore trousers or shorts but no pants inside. This really helped him and I introduced pants slowly later on.
