What age can kids be left alone during school holidays?

DS1 is 12 and DS2 is 10. Previously during school holidays, we have always put both of them in the same school holiday club for a day or two if we needed. However, these school holiday clubs do not cater for kids who are now in secondary school. What do parents do? Do you leave the 12 year old at home for the day alone or what? I work a max of five hours on any given day. DS1 has been left alone at home before for a few hours, and when I was his age I was left home alone all day with my younger siblings and we were fine. WWYD?

I might have just about left a 12 yo alone for 5 hours if responsible and happy to do so but I think 12 is a bit young to be in charge of another child for that length of time.
I also think that 5 hours as a one-off is alright or maybe once a week but probably not day after day.
I really sympathise; I am past this now but school holidays are so difficult for childcare and in particular I think for the 10-14 year olds who don't want to be stuck in clubs all day.

I have a 12 year old. I leave him alone for a couple of hours but I definitely wouldn’t leave him for a working day (which for me means being out of the house 8am to 6pm - I guess it’s a bit different for you as it’s only half that time) - either alone or with a younger sibling. It’s a pain though isn’t it? Some holiday clubs do take older children - maybe ask around in your area.
