Jacinda lol
Yes super exciting

SuperBeagle · 19/01/2018 00:34

Interested to see how this goes. Unfortunately for her, I don't think it'll do her popularity any favours.

Feelingkenty · 19/01/2018 00:53

Is there a Head of State (Prime Minister/ President more so than the Queen) precedent?

Really? I fear I must be in a bit of a bubble here. There was whooping and cheering when someone announced it in our office.

SuperBeagle · 19/01/2018 01:29

pingoose Are you in NZ?

She's PM as the result of a hung parliament, so popularity already is not on her side. I just think that this will further damage her popularity.

Feelingkenty · 19/01/2018 01:37

I think it will further damage her popularity amongst those who didn't like her to begin with (I.e. diehard National supporters) but I think she will increase her appeal to those in a similar position.

I'm not in NZ personally but my mum/ parent friends are pretty excited by the news

pingoose · 19/01/2018 01:40

SuperBeagle yes, in Wellington.

I agree feeling, there are those predisposed to disliking her, this is just one more thing to add to their list.

TheDowagerCuntess · 19/01/2018 02:00

Not quite a hung parliament - with PR, there was never going to be an outright win. Bill would've been PM under the same conditions.

I think it's great news. Her partner will step up, and be a SAHD.

I'm super excited. I really hope this heralds a sea change in sexist attitudes.

comfortandjoy · 19/01/2018 05:58

Yes! I think from a role model point of view it's great for kids to see, a high profile stay home dad too. I just enjoyed telling my 6 year old .

HamAndTomato · 19/01/2018 06:49

feelingkenty yes, there’s a precedent. Benazir Bhutto gave birth while Prime Minister of Pakistan in the 1990s.

I’m in NZ and delighted for her! Hope all goes well.

CheeseyToast · 19/01/2018 07:11

What is this hung parliament of which you speak? Are we back in the 70s?

SuperBeagle · 19/01/2018 07:56

It has been called a hung parliament here. If that's incorrect, soz, but that's what it's been referred to as here.

TheDowagerCuntess · 19/01/2018 08:47

A hung parliament only applies to First Past the Post, when neither party manages to get past the 'post' (50%+).

We have proportional representation (MMP) in NZ.
