10 week old baby taking less formula

Hello

My 10 week old baby has been taking between 5 and 6 ounces of formula over the past 3 weeks or so but over the past few days I’m lucky if I can get 4 into him at each feed. He has started fussing a lot and pushing the bottle away and spitting out the milk in his mouth.

Any idea what this can be? I’m a bit concerned he’s not getting what he need and there’s something wrong.

My son had started doing the same at ten weeks!! Following this!

Glad it’s not just me! I’ve been spending about an hour feeding him but getting nowhere!

Mine is the same. I think there are two reasons - the bottle teats were too slow and he is so easily distracted now that he's noticing things around him more. I've changed his teats and asked his siblings to step away when he's feeding. Also I've started giving him more play time under his baby gym. This seems to be satisfying his need for stimulation and play and he's taking larger amounts of milk again.

It's possible the teats are too slow, especially if he seems to be working really hard. So it's worth trying to see if that's it. Also, mine often took less just before a growth spurt, which is odd, but that seemed to be the case. Beyond that, if he's putting on weight then there's nothing to worry about. At 10 weeks, mine was really only having about 3 oz per feed, so 5-6 oz is quite sizeable. It's possible he just had a growth spurt and is now settling into something more normal for him. But it's worth trying the next size up teats. If he doesn't need them now, he will eventually, so at least you have them.

Great advice thanks ladies! Ive changed his teats already but I do think it's the getting distracted thing!

Normal. They eat more or less during growth spurts. As long as baby is growing I wouldn't worry too much. Short term it's wet and dirty nappies you can keep an eye on for reassurance.

Thank you! I have increased the teat size as he was definitely getting bored/working too hard! Will try the distraction thing too. He definitely went through a growth spurt over Christmas so perhaps he’s just settling down after that I guess. Still getting plenty of wet and dirty nappies so fingers crossed it’s just normal!

Thanks for your help!
