Safety of smart tv

I'm terrible with technology but have decided it's time to upgrade our basic TV to enable us to watch Netflix, iPlayer, 4od, now TV etc on the big screen rather than on a crappy laptop.

DH is very anxious about a) risk of a smart tv being hacked and b) when the kids are older, being able to prevent them from accessing inappropriate content. He is particularly worried about unmoderated stuff on YouTube.

I'm looking for advice on what product to buy that is simple and safe to use. I don't want to use the TV for the internet particularly, just want to be able access catch up and streamed channels listed above that you can't get on freeview.
So do I actually need a smart tv or is there something I can p!ug in to the current TV. I don't think our TV has a usb point unfortunately.

We just got a fire stick and it does the job. Has everything you need and is simply plugged in and out of the tv and into a socket. Comes with its own remote. You can even get a remote that has voice search or get the remote app in your phone.
