Talk to me about acid reflux please...

Not sure if this should be in here, or in health.

I think my little one has acid reflux. She is 1 month old and has the following:

  • hiccups 2 to 3 times a day
  • bubbling milk at the mouth
  • grunting constantly
  • unhappy / crying when on back
  • arching back when lying on tummy (on our chests)
  • spitting up milk while feed (drippling)
  • occasional sick
  • occasion burps that sound wet / like sick
  • inability to settle in the evenings
  • licking top of mouth not long after feeds (think dog eating peanut butter)
  • constant need to suck which has suddenly disappeared so unable yo settle
  • thrashing around with her head
  • trying to kick / turn herself
  • sounds congested like a blocked nose
  • coughing a lot to the point she sounds like she almost chokes.

And today she's started to refuse normal feeds and be sick / choke when lying down (even with the crib slightly raised at the head)

Got a GP appointment later today but I'm struggling, she's so unsettled.

Symptoms starts from birth (bubbles, sick) and have progressively gotten worse (unable to lie flat, wet burps etc) until last night/today (choking) when I simply can't take anymore and Im pretty sure she feels the same.

Health visitor previously said "it's just a baby thing" kinda statement and to remain with infracol.

Could it be acid reflux? How can I best settle / soothe her today?

Sounds like it to me. When DS1 was little I could literally smell the acid on his burps so I knew something wasn't right. He was formula fed and I was confised as to whether it was formula or reflex.
The locum I saw first was less than helpful, but then I went to baby clinic at our surgery and saw the more child orientated doctor. Cue medicines, advice, literature and support and most of all, an assurance I wasn't mad.

Are you breastfeeding? If so then I'd say, if you can, to wait it out another few weeks and see if things settle down. DS2 started off with similar symptoms, but once BF was well established the same refluxy symptoms settled right down.

Thank you for replying.

Baby is formula fed, and today we've decided to try comfort version of the formula after discussing it with a friend who's little one suffered from it.

Little one is still so unsettled.

DS1 ended up on comfort formula. It helped no end. In a weeks time if you’re still concerned, go to the GP. Good Luck :)

Yea sounds like reflux. My son had this he's now 17 months and grown out of it. They might give you gaviscon but just to warn you it may make them constipated. He had ranitidine and omepezole. We had to get a private appointment for the docs to prescribe us that. Also don't put them down 30 mins after feeds. Keep them up. That helped a bit. Obviously raising cot. Hope that helps

Watching as my DD is the same age and has a lot of the same symptoms which are definitely worsening.
