Too young for meat?

My friend has just told me that she doesnt allow her daughter to eat things like pork and steak as she thinks she's too young...she's 8! I have always given the kids the same as what I eat so I was so suprised when she said this, I've never heard it before. She said her eldest DD was about 10 before she started letting her eat meat such as pork chops etc../is it me?

no - your friend is barking (really! )

MrsBadger · 19/04/2007 13:49

nope, friend is weird

unless she is very ethical-vegetarian and wants to wait till they can make an informed choice re eating meat.

WigWamBam · 19/04/2007 13:52

Is it meat as a whole she won't let her have, or just certain types?

My dd is almost 6 and doesn't have steak or chops, and I can't see me giving them to her for a while yet. She likes meat but doesn't enjoy anything with a tough or chewy texure, so I know that there's no point in giving her a steak or a pork chop. So, I haven't even tried.

So shoot me and call me barking.

You're not in the same barking league as the mum in the original post, WWB...your decision is a result of your DD's dislike of meat; you're not imposing your beliefs on her. That poor kid that Diarymilk is referring to will rebel when she's 16 and will supersize herself at her nearest McDonalds...

WigWamBam · 19/04/2007 14:12

I imposed my beliefs onto dd at the start, I'm veggie and until dd was old enough to decide she wanted to try meat, she was veggie too. As dh is a meat-eater, though, I couldn't refuse to cook her meat when she decided she wanted to try it so from that point of view, I agree that the mum in the OP seems a bit odd. Without knowing the full facts, though, it's hard to form an opinion really.

It's certainly not something that would worry me enough to start a thread about though ...

She does have meat, just not tough meat, for instance she'll have mince etc but not steak, lamb or pork...I just found it a bit wierd

My daughter likes meat, as long as she can cut it up small enough anything goes. She's especially fond of braised steak. Got to be loving the fact she's adventurous with food

I think the original poster's friend is a little odd, by keeping her away from the 'difficult' textures for so long she may well be setting her daughter up for not liking them at all as she grows. Not good.

I can understand being vegetarian and not giving meat but otherwise if the family eats it or you think that one day they can have it then she is over protective

we don't have pork on the grounds that i would only have it if organic but nothing age related

adath · 20/04/2007 12:25

Gee whizz dd (3.5) loves pork chops, lamb chops steaks the lot she loves them.
I gave her them when she had the teeth to chew them.
I think it is different if they don't like them but to not give them because she thinks they are too young is a bit barking.

PinkTulips · 20/04/2007 12:27

my ds has had meat since he was weaned!

your friend seems a bit odd, to put it mildly!

PinkTulips · 20/04/2007 12:29
