Hi all,

I'm looking for some advice on how to help my 17 month old DD. She's always been jumpy and used to scream whenever anyone coughed or sneezed. It was a long phase but we seem to have passed it.

However, she now gets very upset if another baby/toddler cries or makes a loud noise and I'm struggling to calm her down. We were at a group this morning where a 9 month old was squealing, it was loud but she's just finding her voice and it was clear she wasn't upset but my DD got very distressed by it, it took 10 minutes to calm her down (walking around looking for flowers/birds!) and then the baby made the same noise and DD was inconsolable. We left and she calmed down but I'm not sure what to do, will she just grow out of it? When it happens I just sit her on my lap and explain why the baby is crying or upset and sometimes it's enough to calm her.

I'm a SAHM so she doesn't go to nursery but we attend several toddler groups. I'm a little embarrassed that the younger babies can deal with the noise (both the initial noise as well as the screaming from my DD) while I have to take DD home to get her to calm down.

Please don’t be embarrassed. Everyone is different and you can bet that the babies who can tolerate the noise will be giving their Mum some worries all of their own 🙂
