Nationwide junior accounts

We recently opened a junior current account and junior savings for my daughter (11) with RBS based on their online information saying she had all services except direct debits and standing orders. But when it all came through it turned out she is not allowed to make payments out of the account in any way at all - she can't pay friends, send BACS transfers, Faster Payments, Paym, nothing. And the savings account turned out to have no book, no website, no app and the only way to access the money if you area child is to go into the branch and get it out in cash over the counter!

So we are currently looking at Nationwide, who make similar kinds of promises, but the information is not that clear because they keep mixing up differen age ranges, saying you can use Android Pay to buy things in shops with their junior card, even though Android Pay requires you to be over 18 to make shop purchases, and the demo of hte app goes into overdrafts and mortgages as it's a general demo. Since the branch is a really long way, I don't want to schlep down there to find it's the same deal, she'll get another account she can put money into in a one way black hole then she won't be able to send it to friends to chip in for pizza, repay parent loans if she doesn't have her purse when she wants something, that kind of thing.

I'm deaf, so I can't phone them up, wondering if anyone physically has this account and can tell me if PayM registration is valid for sending money as well as receiving money, and if she can definitely make a bank transfer out.

Sadly, I don’t think any bank account for an 11 year old does all the things you want.

Can you do online chat with them?

You have to start by logging into internet banking to do the online chat, you can't chat with them when you don't have an account yet. :( They said I could ask questions on Twitter so I tried that but I don't really know how Twitter works!

My DC have Nationwide flex one current accounts and have done since they were 11. They can transfer money out of the account (have done when paying me back for instance). They have contactless cards. There is an app and you can also use online banking.

Let me know if there's anything else you'd like to know

Awesome MirandaWest, thanks. Will be going down there tomorrow to move her money. In practice the gap between banks is about 8 feet, but it will be a long and tedious process to move it!
