Job interview

Sorry I didn't quite know where to put this thread and as me and DP are parents to Baby DS I thought I'd stick it here. Basically DP has job interview last week and they said they would let successful/unsuccessful applicant know early this week. He's still waiting to hear the outcome. Do you think most places let unsuccessful or successful applicants know first? It is a very good and well paid job in the public sector (office relayed). I'm trying to work out of the hearing yet is a good or bad sign? I'm so nervous as this job really affects our future.

It could be anything. Organisations, particularly public sector, will have various internal processes to go through before a candidate can be offered the job, so if someone who has to sign off is away for a day or so then that can delay things.

Candidates are usually 'recommended' or 'not recommended'. So, if not recommended then they could be told that they have not been successful. However, if more than one is recommended then the first choice will be offered the job (after the above internal process) and then if they decline, and they may have a few days to consider, then a second choice could be offered the job.

So the short answer is there is no way of knowing and no point in speculating. Best of luck to you and your DH.

Thanks, arrgghh haha im at home all day with 8 month old DS; I need to take my mind off it! They did say he'd find out either way early this week so I hope today at latest. As tomorrow we're into midweek. I was thinking it does sound like it may be a close call with it taking this long.

Also with them saying DP would hear by early this week I figured today at latest as If they were going to use a more lengthy method of offering it first and waiting etc they could have said by end of week.

Try not to read too much into early next week as they sometimes take ages to decide or get HR to phone - good luck!

Yeah but i think it's only decent to let unsuccessful candidate know straight away? I think it's awful keeping people hanging on unless timescales previously specified. Hopefully they'll keep to their word, you wouldn't mind waiting if it was good news but if bad news you just want them to say!

In most settings, they would approach the preferred candidate first and give that person time to accept or decline the offer. This could take several days to a week, as there could be salary or other negotiations going on. They might also let some people know who were absolutely not hired with no chance at all know around the same time. Anyone who would be seriously in the running though wouldn't be notified until after the initial offer has been accepted or refused. Obviously if the person they really want declined, then the offer would be made to the next preferred candidate and so on. But like "early this week" I would take to mean roughly anytime between Monday and Wednesday, so I'd try to calm down. And sometimes these things get delayed. If further conversations need to happen between the interview panel or with HR, etc. before an offer can be prepared, it can seriously delay it if someone is out sick or on leave or away at a meeting for a day or several days.

Yes thanks, I guess it does sound like DP is in the running; fingers crossed. We'll see what happens. Hopefully he'll hear by tomorrow anyhow if not by close of play.

Still no word so guess we're going into mid week now...I bet this is a sign DP hasn't got the job.
