Advice needed

Hi,

My DD who is now 12 days old sometimes just chokes, completely unexpectedly!! Does anyone else have this with their babies am so worried she will do this in her sleep and we won’t be awake, have taken the chance and started side sleeping her as feel if this is spit related that if she side sleeping she will dribble it instead but MW keeps saying back only!! Help please xxx

Ds did this all the time especially at night and much worse when he got a cold. He just grew out of it after a couple of month. Newborns make some very strange breathing noises but mention it to HV to put your mind at rest.

I think putting her on her front would be preferable to her side but really you should keep her on her back. On her side she could fall forward which would be dangerous. I would have thought not putting her on her back poses a greater risk than her choking while on her back. Do speak to your HV.

They certainly do thank you for the advice and feedback this put my mind at ease an got HV tomorrow so will bring it to her attention x

Sounds like a bit of reflux, my eldest was the same. What helped was raising the head end of his moses basket so he was sleeping slightly elevated rather than completely flat, with something the size of an argos catalogue under the bottom.

LO is 9 weeks old and has choked on her bottle constantly to the point where she has gone blue and lifeless. She also would randomly choke a couple of hours after the bottle (absolutely terrifying!) the HV and doctor had no suggestions.

I have kept her sleeping on her back - you get to know the sound before they are going to do it and I think even though it’s quiet, it would wake you. We also have an angelcare body monitor so that would go off if she stopped breathing/moving.

All I can say is it has got better, she still chokes but it’s easier to clear her airways now she’s a bit bigger, she can often cough it out herself.
