DS1 (3.7) has been potty trained since last summer. I had been noticing that his poo didn't look quite normal for a while then he started having some poo accidents. I took him to the dr. last week who diagnosed a fecal impaction - poor little guy. She said it is common to have some "seepage" (sorry if TMI) accidents and that he could have accidents for up to a week after treatment. But he won't even tell me when he has one - I smell it and then ask him and since he is in a pull-up again he has started peeing in it as well.

I've told him that I understand he might have accidents from the "bad poo" but that he needs to tell me ASAP and that he should not be peeing in his pull-up but it's not working

Any suggestions?

If he's leaking around an impaction, he won't even know. It just leaks out - the likelihood is that he can't feel it happening and doesn't have any idea that he's pooing.

The weeing accidents may be because he's stressed about having poo accidents and not being able to help himself.

The leakage has stopped, impaction is cleared. We had gone back to regular underwear a couple of days ago but he is now doing regular pees and poos in his pants - hence pull-ups again

Ah, right. Hadn't twigged that.

It could still be the impaction that's causing it. Problems like bad constipation and encopresis can cause a lack of sensation down below and can lead to children not knowing when they're pooing or weeing - and if it's been going on for some time, the lack of sensation can carry on for a while once the constipation is cleared. So they still don't know that they're doing it.

Could it maybe be something like that?

I didn't realize that, thanks. Well, I'll give him the benefit of doubt then When the weather warms a bit more we may need to do a crash re-training course.
