Too much weight gain in a breastfed baby?

Saw the health visitor today who told me to increase the time between feeds for my 6 week old soon as he is gaining too much weight. He’s not on a schedule and I feed on demand with feeding cues as recommended by the hospital and initial health visitor.

He is exclusively breastfed and had gone from 8lbs at birth to 12.6lbs at 6 weeks. He does look a bit chubby but he just loves eating and gets really stressed out if he cues to be fed and I don’t feed him.

It’s really knocked my confidence and I don’t know what to do - is this weight gain too much, should I stop feeding on demand and try and push him to a schedule?

Any similar experiences?

Loving these stories.

My DS was also a very large EBF baby, had doubled his birthweight of 3.4kg by 8 weeks and by 7 months was 1.5kg above the top of the 99.6th centile line on the chart - I know this accurately because he was admitted to hospital with an infection and they had to weigh him to determine how much medicine to give. None of the Doctors batted an eye lid.

He was definitely a sumo baby with several rolls of flesh but be warned OP he was very hard to wean - he had gained all the weight he needed off the breast milk and barely ate any solid food at all till he was 2 years old.

He is now a tall but skinny 6 year old.

Must be genetic in our case as DS2 was also massive - but long rather than wide. When we took him on holiday at aged 5 months he was taller than 3 separate one year olds whom we met.

Good luck and enjoy.
