Refusing to poo in potty

Just hoping for some advice -

DS is 2.2 (so I know he's still quite young, and I'm quite relaxed about it just now) but we've been trying an hour or so each night before bed in his "big boy pants" and today I tried a whole day to see how it went. Peeing was fine - some accidents, but each time he knew immediately what he'd done without me saying anything, and he did pee in the potty a couple of times and was very pleased with himself. But then he suddenly asked to have a nappy back on and I realised he was just on the point of pooing. I knew there was absolutely no chance of me getting a nappy on him on time, as we were downstairs and the nappies were upstairs, so I suggested he do it in his potty and brought his potty to him, at which point he started screaming and crying and ran off and did it on the floor, and contiued to cry afterwards (although fifteen minutes later he was happy to sit on his potty again). I know from reading other posts that boys in particular do often seem to have problems with pooing in potties, but what do those with more experience think I should do - give up completely for a couple of months, or keep going with pee training but keep a nappy handy for poos? And is there any way to persuade him it's okay to poo in the potty or will he just take to it in his own time?

DS was the same. It's a bizarre new experience for them so it freaks them out a bit. So DS got stickers on a chart for every poo in potty and that was all the motivation he needed! He's 3.7 yrs old now and he still can be stubborn about actually going (and sometimes tends to hold it in instead of sitting down) but on the whole is fine. It's all about getting used to new things.
