Holiday with a new born

I'm after some advice about taking a new born abroad.

I'm due in May 2018 and my husband and I have booked to go to my sisters wedding in Majorca in June.
If I go overdue, baby will only be 10days old when we are due to fly. Anybody got any advice about potentially taking a newborn away, I just don't want to miss my sisters wedding! Is it possible or am I being foolish holding on to hope?

How will you get a passport?

shushpenfold · 20/10/2017 20:52

Wow. It could go either way but realistically I think you’re being entirely unrealistic! Even if the baby is on due date, it will only be 3 1/2 weeks old. I could hardly string a sentence together at this point. Even with subsequent babies, it would’ve seriously tough. Sorry.

shushpenfold · 20/10/2017 20:52

Ilove.....gosh, that too.

Can't see it myself....you'll not even be out of the ether....leaky books and leaky lady bits....

starsinyourpies · 20/10/2017 20:55

I don’t think you would easily register the birth and get a passport in time. Plus I still couldn’t sit down very well 10 days after never mind go to a wedding!

Cakescakescakes · 20/10/2017 20:56

I don’t think airlines will take a baby less than 2 wks old?

loveulotslikejellytots · 20/10/2017 20:56

I really wouldn't. You could still be feeling like you've been hit by a bus at that point. I had a c section and could only just about stand up, sit down, bend etc without a lot of pain by 3 weeks. At 10 days... no way.

Just the planning, packing, organising, travelling, feeding, just getting your head round being new parents with a tiny baby would make me say no!

It is a shame to miss your sister wedding, but I really wouldn't push yourself to go. And you may not get a passport in time anyway.

PotteringAlong · 20/10/2017 20:57

Not a hope. The chances of you managing to get an appointment for a birth certificate, send it off to the passport office (Along with passport photos) and get a passport back in 10 days are almost nonexistent.

Amimac · 20/10/2017 20:59

You're able to get a passport in one day if you make an appointment to visit the office as I've already looked into this (I live about 20mins away from one) but this whole sitting down business after is definitely something to consider! It's just a tough decision and I'm guessing I just need to hear that I'm being ridiculous and can't have both baby and wedding!

I am really sorry but you won't be able to go, even if you has baby on due date you might struggle with a passport.

It's not something I would risk in terms of paying for now and then not being able to go.

Whilst I am sure your going to be sad that you will miss your sisters wedding, book a September holiday with the money you would of spent.

Holidays with a new born are really easy, especially in Europe. and easier of your staying in a villa or apartment so have kitchen facilities

NerrSnerr · 20/10/2017 21:02

I had two emergency c sections and no way could I have flown. I also don’t think either children had been discharged from the midwife and were both being weighed regularly. It took about 3-4 weeks for feeding to be properly established with my eldest.

dazedandconfuse · 20/10/2017 21:02

I think people on here are being ridiculous I mean I'm sure if you were organised you could get everything sorted out.

I think the main thing would that it would be kind of a terrifying experience and quite stressful but newborns I always found are a lot easier than older babies to care for because they just sleep and eat :/

If this is your first that would probably make me less likely to go but like I said entirely possible.

If you're well organised it's possible so fuck it. Mums can do anything Wine

PotteringAlong · 20/10/2017 21:03

No you can't. You can renew a passport in one day but you can't get a first passport like that.

Winebomb · 20/10/2017 21:04

I had a really quick uncomplicated birth, did it on gas and air and was over in 9 minutes. No stitches, no tears in and out job!

10 days post I was still heavily bleeding, if I was stood for more than 10 minutes It felt like my womb would fall out.

And despite no tearing it was still a bit sore and could only take a wee in a warm bath without almost fainting with pain..

NameChange30 · 20/10/2017 21:05

Not possible, sorry. It's just too soon after the due date.

And this is one of the reasons why I think destination weddings are silly.

dazedandconfuse · 20/10/2017 21:07

P.S my son's first passport came back in a week. My sister also got her sons first passport this year (he was a few months old) and they went and got it done in a day.

BikeRunSki · 20/10/2017 21:07

Even if you could get a passport in a day, you’ll need a birth certificate, which means you’ll need an appointment with the registrar, which can take a few days.

nightshade · 20/10/2017 21:08

Also finding an outfit you're happy with and managing to wash and put on makeup may be a mission in itself!!

RhonaRugMuncherr · 20/10/2017 21:08

I felt fine at 3 weeks post partum. I would have been fine to fly. However, I couldn't get an appointment to register my dd's birth until she was 15 days old so there was no way I'd get a passport in time.

MenorcaSunrise · 20/10/2017 21:09

A friend of mine had a tricky birth but made it to our work Christmas party 2 days after - she was quite anexceptional woman though!

I had all sorts of post partum issues, stayed in hospital for 5 extra days, I didn't even want to leave the house for a couple weeks after except to visit breastfeeding cafes.

Practically you may get everything ready in time, and if you have a straight forward labour you might even feel well enough to go. But it's a lot to take on in the days after giving birth - you have to ask yourself if you want to be organising, packing, traveling in the first few days of baby, when you'll also be recovering, establishing breastfeeding, getting sleepless nights etc. It may all be doable, but you may not want to do it when it comes to it ☺️.

MenorcaSunrise · 20/10/2017 21:10

Btw, we got our baby registered and the birth certificate at the hospital - is this an option for you!

TheWiseOldElf · 20/10/2017 21:11

I also don’t think you can get first passport in a day. I looked into this when DD1 was tiny (nearly 5 years ago now tho).

outabout · 20/10/2017 21:14

Things will be massively stressful around this time with many 'unknowns' so you would be doing yourselves a favour by not going away.
Your baby will probably sleep through all this and be as good as gold (with a bit of luck).

BikeRunSki · 20/10/2017 21:15

I missed my brother ‘s wedding (other end of the UK)! because I was 36 weeks pg and couldn’t face the journey. My nephew set me up a webcam - it wasn’t a bad compromise.

Secondtimesally · 20/10/2017 21:15

Don’t get your hopes up on this. Depending on how your birth goes you could still be in and out of hospital/GP. I didn’t leave the house for 3 weeks except for going to those 2 due to feeding issues and my double incontinence and I was really happy with how my birth went (avoided caesarean).
You will only have this baby once. They will only be this tiny and you so overwhelmed as a first time mum once. Give yourself and your partner a chance to do it without massive stress. There’s always Skype!!
