Ds high temperature

Ds has had high temperature all day but no other symptoms.. he fell asleep after calpol with a temp of 38 at 7pm just checked on him and its gone upto 39.2 but he's sleeping.. should I wake him?

No but at 11pm if he's sleeping I'd wake him for more Calpol and a drink. Make sure he's only got a light blanket on him. The sleep will do him good. (If ultra worried you could give him Nurofen and water at 9pm)

Thanks for your reply, he's not covered now just got pjs on.. he never keeps a cover on anyway always kicks it off. He's never been ill before so I'm a bit anxious

I am not a Dr but personally I would not wake him. My kids used to sleep it off & chances are he will wake for a drink or more meds between now & midnight. Check on him if worried & keep his room cool. Temperature is the bodies way of destroying bug!

Hope he is better soon.

Is take his pjs off and keep checking his temp to make sure it doesn't go higher

He is 2. Thanks just strange that he doesn't seem to have any other symptoms..

Probably some virus thats going round. DH and I were talking today about all GP visits with our children to be told ‘non specific virus’. Its so tricky when they are this age.

I would keep a check on him & see if he is in a restful sleep.

Yeah seems to be a lot going around.. i checked him again at 9 and it had gone down to 38.5 just checked again and it's back up to 39.3.. he seems restful though

When my DS has temperatures (he's prone to very high temps) I always let him sleep but monitor him very closely all night. I'd have him in with you, or go in with him. His temp is obviously high but it might not be fluctuating as much as the thermometer suggests as they can read two different temps within minutes from my experience. Worth double checking possibly?

I'd repeat calpol at 11, then go to bed if his temp lowers again after that. I'd personally set an alarm for every 90 minutes to check it until I know it's steadily or on it's way down.

Definitely wouldn't wake him though. In my experience he will wake if it gets bad. My Ds always does.

Thank you, yeah I'll do that. Just abit anxious because he's never ill and it's not like he's got a cold or anything just really hot.. thanks for the advice

It's horrible isn't it. Last time my DS had it was when he had norovirus. His temp would rise and rise, he'd get distressed, then he'd be sick and have diarrhea and as soon as that was done his temp would quickly go back down and he'd start to feel better.... Until the next episode. Lasted 36 hours.

Usually though he'll just get them fighting off a virus or a bug. It's a good sign as it means the body is fighting it off. There is no need to give calpol to bring it down as it's not really harmful in itself. That said, we always give calpol for anything over 39, just in case! But if my DS was sleeping and had a temp of less than 39 I'd just monitor it and wouldn't medicate.

He can have ibuprofen as well if you have it, both paracetamol and ibuprofen bring down temps.

If it stays that high after stripping him of blankets/clothes, do wake him to give him the next dose. Such high and prolonged temperatures can lead to febrile convulsions, usually harmless but rather scary.

Chances are if he's feeling that rubbish he'll go straight back to sleep. I'd keep him stripped and just cover him with a thin sheet for comfort. Poor boy, not nice for either of you!

Yeah I've only given him calpol for teething before, it's strange because he doesn't appear to be in any discomfort, just watched him sleeping for 10mins, his breathing is fine and he's sleeping soundly

Still warm and struggling to swallow, temp has been mid 37 all day and went upto 38 again before bed again.. I'm going to take him to the drs tomorrow because the receptionist I spoke to this morning just dismissed it as a viral infection going around but I'm worried he's not drinking as much as usual because his throat is hurting? Not coughing or anything though
