Burping

I hate burping so much, I just don't seem to be able to do it properly.

When do babies no longer need to be burped, I hope it's early on! DS is only 7 weeks though..

Does he have wind? Is he breastfed or bottle fed? Some babies just don't need it

Meepmoop · 11/09/2017 19:15

He's breastfed but does seem to suffer from wind quite badly

Define 'suffer from wind'? What does he do? And does burping always relieve it?

He burps or spits up. I've noticed the past few nights he has been lifting his legs up and squirming quite a bit. This was relieved with burping/giant filling of nappy

Babies do lift legs and squirm, though. They need to start somewhere to begin rolling and progress to other developmental milestones. It isn't necessarily wind. What happens if you don't burp? Does he bring it up by himself? What about just keeping him upright after a feed rather than actively burping?

Meepmoop · 11/09/2017 19:49

I guess it could not be wind he just seemed very uncomfortable. He would bring it up but usually milk with it. I've tried just sitting him up but I'm not sure if it makes any difference, I may have to do it longer

Breastfeed babies tend not to need as much burping as bottle in theory.

I hate to say it but my son is 1 on Saturday and I sometimes have to still give him a pat, plus he still spits up a little if he's gulped too much/too quick/has a cold. He's bottle fed now. So it depends on your baby really.

Have you ruled out reflux etc? TBH babies will have gripey pain at this age with digesting milk as it's all so new. Congratulations though Flowers

I still burp my 5 month old but she suffers with bottom wind more so.. Have you tried gripe water? I found giving it before a feed was great.. We got the boots brand as tasted nicer and cheaper!! x

My DS always needed burping and spit up a lot too. I found gripe water after a feed helped.

Once DS was about 5/6 months and starting to eat solids and roll about more and sit up by himself then he didn't need to seem to have any issue dealing with his own burps.

Quickest way I found was to 'play' Row Row Your Boat - sit baby and rock back and forwards and then in circles in both directions. Worked like a charm by about the third circle.
Now she's a bit bigger (4 months) I sit her up, lean her forward and if she needs a burp she does it after about the fifth pat.
