Managing Tantrums

So the terrible twos were nothing compared to DD(3)s tortuous threes!

I'm struggling with tantrums when we're out without DH. Today she had a tantrum at the shops and screamed, hit, ran away.. it went on and on. In the end I picked her up and carried her, hitting me and wrestling to get down, to the car. But she's getting very heavy now and I can't really carry her - I've really hurt my back.

So has anyone got any advice on strategies to use on tantrums when we're out to keep her safe and not injure myself..
