Milk intolerant or just too young?

Have just tried my 5 month old with cows milk and her face went red wherever the milk had been. Is this something I need to worry about or just try her again in a month or two.
She's a bit refluxy but gaining weight well. She's exclusively breastfed and I eat dairy, so she can't be allergic, can she?

My DC hadvreflux that was made worse because I ate dairy. When I stopped, the reflux stopped! So maybe it is the dairy?

Why would you be giving cows milk at 5 months? She could be reacting to the milk proteins. Maybe try again after she is 6 months by adding it to cereal, using it in food , etc

I think the official advice (in the U.K.- may be different if you live elsewhere, also I'm not sure if advice differs for preemies if that is relevant for you) is to give cows milk as a drink from 1 year, and in cooked food from 6 months. She may just be too young.

Cows milk shouldn't be given to babies until they are 12 months

Actually I don't think it's just cooked food from 6 months, think it's in any food. Sorry, it's amazing how quickly you forget! So I guess she's not too far off that but maybe try with food in a month?

Surely cow's milk isn't as "hygenic" as formula milk at such a young age?

thereareworsethingsicoulddo · 16/08/2017 09:37

My DS is severely allergic to cows milk protein but was fine with my breast milk and I eat dairy. So it doesn't always correlate.

Belmo · 16/08/2017 10:03

My dd did similar the first time she had dairy, the second time her whole face ballooned!
I would try again in a month or so, but very cautiously.

The advice is no to cows milk as a drink before 12 months but yes it's ok on foods from 6 months (ie for cooking or with cereal) as far as know
