So does no-one else leave their baby outside the shop in the buggy any more then?

Just wondered because I am the only person I know in RL that does this!

I wouldn't leave him outside Sainsburys for an hour or anything, but when it's a little shop and either I'm only going to be a moment, or I can see out of the window, it doesn't bother me a bit.

Surely it's the easiest thing to do?

Well, if it's the bakers at the end of our road I do, because it's not possible to get the buggy through the door (I'm guessing that it's not wheelchair accessible either) so I leave DS outside (can see throught the window and only about 6ft away from him.

LittleB · 28/03/2007 12:48

Yes, when I can't get the buggy through the door, and I can see her in the buggy outside the shop.

confusedandignorant · 28/03/2007 12:48

I would do it at the local shops which are often a bit too small for buggys and prams. With DC1 twenty odd years ago I was asked to leave pram outside until there was an incident where a young baby went missing reportedly from outside a shop, so we were then dragged inside for a time.

(As for the missing baby the whole thing was made up and it was a very sad affair involving a disabled baby and the father)

Never, nor in my car when paying for petrol

paulaplumpbottom · 28/03/2007 12:51

I can't think of a single situation where I would leave my DD alone in public, if even for a minute. There are way to many crazies out there.

mumto3girls · 28/03/2007 12:54

Never never never....

KathyMCMLXXII · 28/03/2007 12:54

But children are hardly ever harmed or abducted by strangers - it's nearly always a member of the family.
I just don't think that there are lots of crazies where I live.... may be different in your area of course Paula.

Nope, never

NotQuiteCockney · 28/03/2007 12:56

I've done it loads. Actually, I still do it sometimes, now, but I have to leave DS1 out with DS2 to keep DS2 happy.

Never Sainsbury's or a big shop, but often in tiny little shops. Why not?

melminx · 28/03/2007 12:56

never

wildwoman · 28/03/2007 12:56

I wouldn't leave them outside a shop, but I do leave them in the car to pay for petrol, locked car though

mumto3girls · 28/03/2007 12:58

I would worry about cars mounting the pavement, something falling from the sky or roof, a dog suddenly atatcking the pram..in fact anyhting and everything...I know it's silly and I know some of these things could happen when I'm with them...but if i wasn't I'd never forgive myself. If my buggy doesn't fit I carry them into the shop.

ProfYaffle · 28/03/2007 12:59

Yes, but I'm in a small rural market town and only leave the pram outside small shops in shopping yards off the main road where I can see it. Wouldn't do it in the Big City though.

LittleB · 28/03/2007 13:01

Yes, I only do it with the little local shops and only the health food shop where I can't get her buggy through the door. I don't think there are too many crazies around, and I can always see the buggy, I'd be out there by the time anyone worked out how to undo the straps or take the brake off. I also leave her in the car when paying for petrol, although I do lock it, with a window slightly open. She's often asleep in the car, and waking her, getting her out of the seat and then paying for petrol with very annoyed sleepy toddler is too much hassle. Petrol stations all have CCTV anyway. When was the last time a baby/child was taken from outside a shop or a petrol staion?

confusedandignorant · 28/03/2007 13:05

agree fully with KathyM, children are rarely abducted by strangers, more likely by estranged fathers demanding better access

There aren't as many crazies as the daily mail would have us believe and certainly no more that there were many years ago.

I would often come out of butchers, bakers or post office to find elderly lady talking to DC both having a whale of a time, it probably made the lady very happy

motherinferior · 28/03/2007 13:06

I don't think I have done it, but I wouldn't condemn other people for it IYSWIM. Would deffo do the petrol lark.

The crazy who would like to abduct the Inferiorettes doesn't exist

HotXMum · 28/03/2007 13:17

Wildwoman, I couldnt leave him in the car locked up for fear that there might be an explosion or fire on the forecourt.

I know this is extreme but ours in the kind of family that if it happens it will happen to us.

KathyMCMLXXII · 28/03/2007 14:04

Hmm, more people would do it than I thought. Good.

No

Greenleeves · 28/03/2007 14:06

No, I wouldn't dream of doing this. I would be much too afraid of losing them.

Iklboo · 28/03/2007 14:07

I do - if it's a littls shop, I'm just popping in and I can see him out of the window. Otherwise it's just not practical

Greenleeves · 28/03/2007 14:09

lol, I have said similar things about the boys MI - whoever had the misfortune to abduct ds1 would probably dump him at the nearest bus stop after about twenty minutes

I wouldn't do it though all the same.

tibsy · 28/03/2007 14:10

no, if i can't get the pushchair into the shop, i actually take dd out, even if she is asleep

BikeBug · 28/03/2007 14:10

I do with our local shops - bakers, chemists etc. Wouldn't in the middle of town though!

Dazie · 28/03/2007 14:11

lots of parents leave their babies asleep in their cars whilst collecting from school this I dont really like, but outside a shop whilst you can see them doesnt seem like a problem although I've never done it.
