Appropriate TV for 5 year old

I've just had a blazing row with my other half about a TV program that I'd let our 5 year old watch. The Flash? What are others views? Is it too adult? My DS watched the beginning of one episode and quite liked the fact the character was super speedy, but then he got bored and wandered off mid program to do something else. He wasn't really interested. But my DP saw the 'blurb' to the program on our planner which said 'the Flash is confronted by the man who killed his mother' and went ballistic at me saying it's too adult a theme. He made me feel like a really crap mum. His exact words were "where's your head at?"... But I still don't see that there's anything wrong. It's the same kind of (abstract) theme that's found in lots of these superhero programs/films. I'd appreciate others views on this. If my DS had enjoyed the program I'd have had no problem letting him watch it in the future, but my OH was horrified with me! Is he overreacting or am I not seeing the big picture?
