No, but I inadvertenly told dd not to be stupid today in front of 2 other mums who shot me daggers today.

Twiglett · 29/03/2007 11:50

DH calls DS stupid .. I throw real daggers at him for it

(don't have a problem with 'don't be stupid' though)

MamaMaiasaura · 29/03/2007 12:01

Personally I find it more offensive to hear mums calling there children little fucking bastards.

If ds does do something I find it better to say that the behaviour/action was naughty/not nice/not ok etc rather than the child.

Words I do find offensive used towards children are much more expletive.!!

Twiglett · 29/03/2007 12:02

I remember before I had kids I was living in a shared house and one of the blokes came home and said he'd just been in a department store and there was a woman in there with her daughter who was about 6

the daughter was trying on a coat and looking in the mirror and the mother said

"So, do you think you look nice in that or do you look like a cunt?"

Never use naughty... evil little sh*t on the other hand....

colditz · 03/04/2007 08:55

I use naughty

"That was naughty"
"you are being naughty, stop it"
ectectt

I agree that if you seperate the action too much from the child, they start to think the consequences are nothing to do with them, and therefore not their problem.

grannyquackersleetlefuffychick · 03/04/2007 08:57

i use "naughty" as an encouraging term. we like our children to challenge. they've tended to be very well behaved and we want them to grow up questioning the way things are, so i think of "naughty" as a good word

and as for your song/poem, floating, i really don't like it. there are so many different reasons for behaviour and for example, suggesting a child is shy because he is used to being ridiculed, just makes parents feel guilty

OrvilleRedenbacher · 03/04/2007 08:58

what a stupid OP

colditz · 03/04/2007 08:59

Well, it depend, Granny, on how much naughty behavior one person is subjected to in one day as to whether a parent views naughty behavior as positive or not.

RubberDuck · 03/04/2007 09:01

We use "naughty" in a " giggle wasn't that naughty" sense, never in the telling off sense.

Or if one of the kids hurts themselves (for example, tripping over a step) I might wag my finger at the offending object and say "naughty step for hurting my [ds]" which the kids think is hilarious

(Then again, they probably just think I'm a nutter... hey ho...)

tigermoth · 03/04/2007 09:06

Naughty is a real word from real life.

Generations of children have grown up fine on the word naughty.

Used in the context of a 'normal' loving home and family, I cannot see the problem. As zippi said, it's useful as short, to-the-point word for a quick telling off.

grannyquackersleetlefuffychick · 03/04/2007 09:08

colditz, tbh, i feel like i'm in a different dimension now i'm on my fifth. i just laugh and smile through all the "naughty" behaviour. my mind is on a different planet

LittleSarah · 03/04/2007 09:28

Sheesh, there really is far too much worrying over parenting now isn't there?!

I use the word naughty and like Bozza also use a number of other words; kind, clever, funny, cheeky etc. My dd knows I love her and think she is great, she also knows I get annoyed when she misbehaves. It really isn't that hard.

But of course because of this thread I shall now try to make sure I say 'what you just did was naughty' not 'you were naughty' which is really annoying!

rarrie · 03/04/2007 17:48

Yes definitely, If her behaviour is naughty or unpleasant, then I will tell her that her behaviour is naughty or unpleasant. At her old nursery, the workers weren't allowed to say that, they had to say she was being silly, which upset her no end because to us, being silly is hiding under the duvet pretending the big bad wolf is after us or pretending that we're blue monsters who live on mars or something! she got terribly confused, so I think it is better just to say what you mean rather than using euphemisms which can get misinterpreted.

However, it in no way has lead to any loss of self esteem. At playgroup the other week, one of the members of staff told my DD that she was clever to which she replied "Yes, I know that, my mummy tells me that all the time".

mytwopenceworth · 03/04/2007 17:50

you are a naughty child - yes
what you have done is naughty / that was a naughty thing to do - no

mytwopenceworth · 03/04/2007 17:52

oh, not to be confused with 'norty', either!

i really love that word and have managed to give it a different pronunciation that tickles me

while at the same time clearly demonstating that i need a transfusion of Life, stat.

lucyellensmum · 03/04/2007 17:52

oh god, im such a bad mother, im ALWAYS telling my dd (18m) that she is naughty. I dont know, its just such a cute sounding word - you're naughty, i used to say it to puppies alot too

sorry havent time to read through it all, but what i DO find offensive is the amount of parents who, when you are out somewhere, allow their children to be little brats and hit/push/generally act like the world revolves around them and everyone else should get out of their way etc., and who DONT tell them they are being naughty/in the wrong/however you want to put it.

i used to be into all that 'call the behaviour naughty not the child' but since my 2 children came along (and started going to school/activities with other children) ,reality has kicked in and i just can't be bothered with all that now.

more people need to wake up imo and concentrate on discipline, teaching right from wrong, and that the world doesn't revolve around them, then this country would not be going down the toilet in such a hurry (and i am not saying me+my children are perfect, far from it)and i dont care anymore if i sound old fashioned either.

i just think letting children have all the control over teachers and parents as is now happening, is not natural, part of growing up is to learn these things, it doesn't mean you are 'abused' or must get 'self-esteem issues' if it is done by good, loving parents. i am not even talking about physical punishment, which i don't like, i just mean to be verbally told off or have punishment like possessions confiscated etc)

some people won't even SAY anything to their child as they are afraid to now.
