My 5 year old is struggling with reading and I want to support him with some learning books over the summer. Are there any phonic books people could recommend? He's on level 2 and still gets confused between letters and can only read a few diagraphs. I need a book that has all these 2 and 3 letter combinations included. He'll be going into year 1 in September. Thanks.

The Julia Donaldson songbirds are a good set but I think they are more phase 3. If you Google Dandelion Launchers they have books for phase 2.
Also try just making little flashcards for him, the letter on one side and he could draw a picture on the back. So S on one side then he could draw a snake. Five minutes a day with the cards should help with recognition. He can use then to make words.

Thank you. I've got some flashcards and we've started practicing Smile

Try the phonics play website. Lots of games from reception onwards.

we have the julia donaldson songbirds - got a set with 6 levels, 6 books per level. They are great as all words in each book are at the right level. DS1 was free reading by the end of Y1 and DTs have just finished reception and are on level 3 using these.

I also play 'phonics lucky dip' - write words on bits of paper and get him to pick them out like a lucky dip. you can turn it into a game (10 correct and he gets an extra bedtime story etc).
