2.5yr old : routine/bedtime

DC only naps during the day if we are in the car (occasional and about 20-30minutes between 1pm and 4pm) and doesn't like to eat dinner until 6/6:30pm. I'm finding most nights they aren't tired until about 10.

Weekends I wake them at 9am and weekdays is 7am. Wake time doesn't seem to effect the time when they are "bed ready". Literally they are full of energy until about 9/9:30.

After dinner, about 7pm, we have half hour play while I tidy and then bath and pjs. Then they sit with a book or quiet toy from around 8pm. Even if I put them in bed they sit awake.

I've always thought it was late but early waking / no naps etc hasn't changed their sleep need.

I'm concerned they aren't sleeping enough, and all the "experts" say they should be in bed between 7pm and 8.

When does your toddler sleep?

My Dd was doing 7-7 at that age (still is pretty much aged 4).

I think your routine is fine if it works, however when she goes to school she may struggle cos of doing so much more.

But she may be fine. Some people just need less sleep.

From 9 mo ds now 2.10 has done 7-7. Asks to go to brush his teeth and go to bed. . He naps still if he is in the car. . Has tea between 5-6 and a yogurt before bed.

Slept a bed since 2. .

My 2 year old does go to sleep at 7-7.30. She's not a fan of naps though and is always awake by 6.30. What happens if you try and put them to bed earlier?

7-7 here too. He also naps from 1 til 4 most days if we are at home.

DS just turned 2 and goes to bed at easily 7, sometimes 7:30. He also naps for 1-2 hours during the day every day.

BUT he rarely gets up later than 6, is usually awake any time from 5 playing by himself until he can convince either myself or dp to get up with him, and it's far from uncommon for him to be up for the day at FOUR FRICKING THIRTY.

So I'm not sure that's any better :/

My toddler wont sleep before 9pm, so you have solidarity from me. I'd love to put him to bed at 7 and have the evening to ourselves, but it doesnt happen. He is just awake and bouncing with energy, so gets out of bed, climbs around, plays, chatters. Doesnt make a difference if light is off and room quiet.

My DS is 2.9 years and goes to bed at 7, doesn't have a nap unless we're out in the car but is an early water, normally up between 5 and 5:30 but does goes through phases of getting up at 4:30!!

EpoxyResin · 22/07/2017 19:47

Thinking about it his naps are more like 1.5-2.5 hours, but that's not too critical information i think.

They've never been a early riser naturally but if I wake them theres no fuss getting up etc.

If I put them to bed earlier they just lie quietly for hours, I've occasionally sent them to bed early and it's pointless as there's no extra sleep. No hassle either but I'd rather they "read" a book for a extra hour or so.
