What time does your 12 yo go to bed?

DH & I are reaching something of an impasse on or Ds1's bedtime. He has been going up to bed at 8 o'clock for years. These days he falls asleep anytime between 9 and 10pm depending on how tired he is. I think he should be allowed to stay up later but DH is adamant that he has to go up to his bedroom at 8pm, even in school holidays and at weekends.

What time do your 12 yo go up to their rooms and what time do they have to turn out their lights and is it any different at weekends/holidays?

Lights out 8.45/9pm on a school night. Fri/Sat and holidays 10/11.

I've just put my 9 and 6 year old to bed now (school holidays). School night lights out at 9 up to bed about 8.45

8 seems very early to me. My 12 yr old goes up at 9, faffs til 10 many nights and gets up at 7. My 9 yr old goes up at 8.30!
Your dh needs to get used to having kids around in the evening it was a big shift to us and I still have nostalgia for the time when babies were in bed at 7!

Ds (10) is just brushing his teeth just now. It is the holidays though. Dd about to do hers.

burntoutmum · 21/07/2017 06:29

At 12 DS was going to bed at 9 - awake at 6.45. School holidays / Friday and Sat nights - pretty flexible.

He's now 13, almost 14, and is usually climbing into bed roughly 9.30/9.45 pm

Tilapia · 21/07/2017 06:30

My 11yo goes to bed at 9pm.

burntoutmum · 21/07/2017 06:32

P.s, I know that out of all his friends he's the earliest to bed ( I asked around!) so hence us pushing it up abit recently. However he is fast asleep as soon as his head hits the pillow so he does need his sleep!!

I have a friend with a much younger son, and when her SS comes to stay he is made to go to bed at the same time as the younger one - 7.15pm..... the step son is 15!! ShockGrin

Ifailed · 21/07/2017 06:35

Depends what time they need to get up? From memory, they usually need about 9 hours sleep, so if up at 6:30, bed by 9 for sleep at 9:30.

CPtart · 21/07/2017 06:40

Lights out 9.30 on a school night (often gets later if at scouts).
Later in the hols. 8pm does seem early. Almost cruel in the holidays. Agree your DH does need to bend on this and be used to having him around later. From experience of an older one they do gradually need less sleep and it's only fair.

TipTopTipTopClop · 21/07/2017 06:45

8 is ridiculously early and mean for a child on 12 on holiday.

My 11.5 year old goes to bed at 9pm on school nights and 10 on weekend nights. During the summer holidays, it's closer to midnight, we pay no mind to his bedtime as long as he reads during the day.

RippleEffects · 21/07/2017 06:51

I think it depends on the child and amount of sleep they need. DS1 is 13 and autistic. His bedtime wind down routine starts at 6pm with medication at 8.30pm and sleep around 9pm. Half an hour later meds on weekends and holidays. We're an up early family and generally getting up from 6am so he is getting 9 - 10 hours sleep (with disturbances) DS2 is 11 but has always needed less sleep and falls asleep easily so doesn't need a big wind down period so his lights out is around 9 weekdays and 10ish weekends/ holidays.

13 year old is always in her room by 8/8.30, although she goes to sleep whenever she feels tired. I see no reason for her to be downstairs. She has everything she wants in her bedroom and can spend her evening reading, drawing, watching films or youtube etc. Evenings are for us to have some time together to chat etc, and watch adult tv.

Desmondo2016 · 21/07/2017 22:55

My 12 year old comes in from playing out about 9ish although he's in and out all evening. He is normally in bed by 9.30 and watches a dvd until going to sleep around 10-10.30.

TodaysUser · 21/07/2017 23:00

9pm. As I did at his age. Gives the adults some peace

isittheholidaysyet · 21/07/2017 23:04

9.30 is normal bedtime.
Creeps to 10 or 10.30 at weekends.

umberellaonesie · 21/07/2017 23:06

School nights - shower 8.30pm in bed by 9
1/2 an hour later weekends and holidays.
He is up at 6.30 on school days though and is always asleep by 9.15

Titsywoo · 21/07/2017 23:08

9pm during the week and 10pm on weekends and school hols. Same for my 10 year old. I reckon they are asleep within an hour of going to bed so get 9 hours during the week - at the weekend DS still gets 9 hours but DD sleeps in and gets nearer 11 but she's going through puberty so I guess she needs more sleep now?!

I reckon these bedtimes will stay until they are around 15/16.

8 is really early for a 12 year old!

WeAllHaveWings · 21/07/2017 23:09

At 12 my ds would still be out with friends at 8. Way too early bedtime for holidays. Why does your dh want him in bed so early?

Sgtmajormummy · 21/07/2017 23:11

9:30 during term time (school starts at 8am, six days a week).
10:30 in the holidays.

DD is 11 and a half.

booellesmum · 21/07/2017 23:12

10.00 pm or just after. Goes to sleep about 10.30.

Mycarsmellsoflavender · 21/07/2017 23:15

12 yo usually in bedroom by 9 pm with lights out between 9.30 and 10pm.
