Pirate costume, short notice - What can I do?

My son needs to go in dressed a pirate tomorrow for a big assembly

He has no pirate costumes at all, I can't sow and have no idea what to do or where to start!

He's so excited to have his own song to sing and he will be so upset if he don't look the part.

I'm absolutely skint, not a penny to my name till payday!

He's got black jeans, I think a short sleeved stripy brown top but, IDK. Stuck.

Please advice, anything will do, I'll have a few hours this evening to try get some stuff together for him.

Does he have a sword? Could you use a binbag to fashion a belt for the sword to go in? Do you have any stripy tips you could sacrifice to create a bandana? Make an eye patch? Do you have a cuddly toy parrot? Does he have old jeans or shorts you could cut shorter to look more pirate?

Old jeans or trousers cut them to a cropped length in a zig zag fashion.

Striped t- shirt as a top.

Kohl eye liner to make a beard and some scars on his face.

Get a tie or a length of fabric to make a sash of some description around his waist.

Cardboard cutlass- craw the shape from any old bit of cardboard, cover with silver foil and use black marker pen to draw/colour in handle.

Great ideas thank you soo much. I'm really terrible at this stuff I've no imagination at all..

I believe there is a top with skulls on somewhere I'm gonna try dig it out and I will cut down his black jeans to make them piratier .. do you think black jeans or school trousers would look better cut?

I'll see if I've got something for his waist love the big bag idea I'll give it a go!

I'll give it all a go lol. He's so excited!

Have you got a scarf you could tie round his waist and tuck a sword into.

If you haven't got a sword use a cereal/cardboard box cut out to look like a sword and paint it grey/black/silver. Have you got a parrot? Again draw one, cut it out of cardboard and paint it green and stitch it to the shoulder of a t-shirt.

Paint a moustache and eye patch on with eye liner/face paint and if you haven't got a bandana slick his hair back with a parting.

Stripey top and jeans/shorts should be fine, Ive used a white t-shirt before and its looked ok.

Large hoop earrings at all? Make a single earring and tuck it under a scarf/bandana on his head. DS used Grandads handkerchief and tied knots in the corners for his hat. No one commented it wasn't piratey enough. .

Make a sword shape from card. Cut out and wrap some tin foil around the blade part

clumsyduck · 18/07/2017 13:57

The clothes you have sound fine
Scarf as a belt
Have you any cardboard ? Cut out a sword shape and wrap tinfoil round it ( iv done this looked pretty good !)

I have the swashbuckle theme tune in my head now Sad

You probably don't need to cut the trousers if you don't have any suitable old ones - just rolling them up will do. Have you a stripey or red or black handkerchief or small scarf that could be tied round his head?

My sons school did a pirate assembly at one days notice (reception) there were a mix of shop bought costumes down to kids wearing uniform refusing to be a pirate. My kid had jeans, old skull themed t shirt, cardboard and string eye patch and a cheap fake silk black scarf about his waist (I'd had for years). Revised to have it on his head as a bandana. Eyeliner moustache and scar 😄

Oh one child had a parrot safety pinned to his shoulder, inspired.

If you have some kitchen foil spare wrap it and seletape it to the blade bit of the cupboard sword! My mum did this years ago for my brother was little. He had an eye liner beard and moustache and scar and she did make up on his eye like he had a bruise cos we couldn't make an eye patch.

He had an old ripped white t shirt and rolled up trousers and mum wrapped a big belt with foil as well which he used to hold the cardboard sword in. Was ace!!

Eyeliner pencil for Johnny Depp guyliner, moustache, swarthy beard, scar etc adds to the costume too.

SnotGoblin · 18/07/2017 14:34

Black tshirt, denim shorts, muslin knotted around his head like a bandana.
