Sleeping

Please give suggestions. I have a nine week old who will sleep in her Moses basket at night but in the day she will either wake as soon as I put her down or not stay asleep long in there. She will only sleep in my arms. She doesn't like to be swaddled as she likes her hands free and I've created a nest. Any advice please

Sling?

She's only nine weeks old, give her time.

Read up on 4th trimester.

Be grateful she will sleep at night, it sounds like she's actually doing pretty well

Its normal newborn behaviour. it gets better. Take her for a walk in the pram - motion can help x

Ok thank you all I am very grateful she sleeps at night but my nan keeps telling me I shouldn't be nursing her in my arms in the day and I am creating a rod for my own back and she should be put down if she is napping. It was making me feel a tad guilty

That's very old fashioned thinking and current research shows it is just not true. In fact the opposite. And as they get older, and sleep longer, it will become possible to put her down.

Remember where she was 9 weeks ago- inside you, warm, dark, reassuring noises. The big, light space of daytime moses basket is very alien.

Many many things will have changed about baby rearing since your nan's times e.g. SIDS guidelines, weaning age and many more things

I think, in the nicest possible way, ignore your nan. You can't spoil a baby with too many love and cuddles. I've got my 12 week old asleep in the sling right now so I can potter and he's comfy.

I also use a sleepyhead - feed him in my arms to sleep the gently lower him in with my arms still round him then gently withdraw. I assume he feels nice and cosy in it.

Good luck and enjoy - they won't be little this long!

I spent so long stressing about naps because I was told a similar thing by relatives. It made me miserable and I wish I had just gone with the flow. Things change so quickly, next week she may be completely different. It's bloody hard though isn't it! Brew

WinkyisbackontheButterBeer · 08/06/2017 18:04

Mine was like that up to 5 months. I even have threads similar to yours on here. At 5 months something suddenly flipped and now she won't sleep anywhere but in her cot.
Give it time and enjoy the cuddles. My dd is 8 months and cruising. She doesn't want to be on my knee for long and I miss snuggling up with her on my lap.
also miss having an excuse to sit in front of the tv for most of the day

Thank you for all your comments. I do love cuddling her and I do have a sling which I have not used yet. Yes it is hard with your first baby when you are told you should not be doing something a certain way. I will just do what I think is best from now on

My 20 week old slept on me today. She needed to be held. From 12 weeks I've been putting her down to sleep for the most part. Today, she needed a cuddle. Just ignore anyone who talks about spoiling a baby. You can't. I couldn't put my eldest daughter down in the first 6 months, she's almost 6 now and I have to fight to keep her on my knee! Enjoy those snuggles Flowers
